24 inch 144hz PC Monitor help

Okay I need to get a 24 inch, 144hz PC gaming monitor.

It needs to be sub £300 and not Display Port.

Note: Not a 4K one.

Have looked at few, however it's a total minefield.

Front runners are ASUS and ACER.

Had differing reviews in BenQ panels and AOC ones.

A GSync panel would be good, however these are priced to high for what they are.

so open to suggestions on decent 24 inch 144hz monitors.

I had the Asus VG248QE, great screen if a little out on colour. Thats easily fixable by looking up settings online for whatever colour type you like. Can also change it from landscape to portrait if needed to or if you wanted multiple screens. Not 100% sure if the HDMI supports 144hz as it doesn't specify what HDMI version it is. 1.4b and over can support 120hz+.

If you use SCAN they might test it in their shop for you before you purchase it. Although its not cheapest on that site.

Or alternatively use PCpartPicker, to compare all monitors with you specified criteria.

It's a brand choice, I've had 3 BENQ monitors in the past 7 years and could not fault a single one. See if you like any of the listed and if you could buy it cheaper somewhere else?

Just my 2 pence worth. As a very keen PC gamer myself I would put size and resolution way ahead of refresh rate.

Most tests done back to back of 60hz monitors vs 120/144hz monitors have had mixed feedback, some prefer one and some prefer the other for gaming. Also the only games where you'll notice the benefit is where you're going to be able to have the framerate high enough ie most new games at high graphics settings will struggle to be above 60fps unless you have an absolute monster of a machine and lower the settings, so usually 60hz will be absolutely fine.

Having had quite a few monitors getting a bigger size and upping the resolution put the biggest smile on my face, so I'd go with a 27inch 1440p monitor and sacrifice a bit on the refresh rate

That's a good approach, I have never played in 1440, so wonder how good would that be? So far, I have prefered just a normal 1080, but with an insane framerate, think you could go well above 60 fps in any of the modern games with a decent 144hz monitor, especially if you like your shooters. gfx970 or amd equivalent would give you a decent framerate in 1080 on high/ultra settings, couple it with a decent 144hz monitors and you're set up nicely for a while.
Alternatively could always go for a 27'' 144hz 1440p monitor... pretty much same discussion as with engine/spec problems

No game should struggle to get to 120/144hz with even entry level card especially these days but depends on what brig wants the screen for too? , I would agree for resolution if he was picture editng and for entertainment, but for FPS or fast paced games refresh rate is the winner there id say.

Personally i play on a 75" 4k tv at 60hz, and after an hour or two i feel sick because of the 60hz, going to 120/144, its amazing on the eyes, less strain, smoother if you can percieve it i just no longer have room for a monitor ,

Mainly FPS, Fallout 4, Witcher Wild Hunt and of course World of Warships and War Thunder

24 inch is the largest I would go as once you hit the next form factor you start needing to up your GFX's, as soon as you up your GFX's, it's as well going for 4K ...

Dvi-D rather than HDMI as it handles the higher refresh speeds, HDMI is okay for console fanboys but not for decent systems.

Again going Display Port would mean a change of GFX card p.

Would also be TN rather than IPS monitor, costs and refresh rate come in to it.

TN as you can't really get a decent 144hz IPS monitor at that price range.

Plenty decent spec IPS at 60Hz.

Also majority of GSync are TN panels.

GPU is a GTX 970, however it also needs to handle a GTX 750 TI.

This means 24 inch 144hz TN panel with dual link DVI-D is what is required.

That and 27 would be slight too big for using in my office.

I'm using the benQ XL2720z as I used to be into competitive gaming.

Going from 60hz to 120/144hz is the best thing you can have, less strain on your eyes, and even if the frames doesn't reach 120 or 144 (which every card nowadays do) you'll still see a difference. I spent 2 weeks using my 60hz laptop monitor and my eyes killed me, and I could notice how crappy the frames were even if I would get over 200fps in some games.

People say 60hz is fine, but they obviously haven't used a 120-144hz monitor enough. No normal person will be happy with 60hz if they have used a 120/144hz montior.

The Asus one is an excellent gaming screen, just look at its rating on pc part picker, even better buy at under 300 too, but if TN is a must then alot of panels i have used are ips so couldnt comment on their gaming performance.

Dvi-d completely skipped my mind due to it not supporting 4k@60hz hence i use HDMI 2.0, but plenty of choice for them and both your GPU's should easily get 120+hz albeit different graphic settings of course,

A local computer shop or pc fair should have some gaming displays on show to use if any are near you?

The best option for 4K is display port.

HDMI even the 2.0 standard is getting limited by its bandwidth.

Display port bandwidth can support much higher levels.

So you should ditch the TV and get a decent 4K monitor running display port

My 4k Asus is fantastic and under £400, even though it's only at 60hz I haven't found it to be an issue. But as you say, unless you're upgrading your whole system it's overkill. I've had Benq monitors in the past and I haven't got a bad word to say about them, they're great value for money.

I dont think it is the best, maybe the wider option for PC monitors but is a very specific port , I have no problems with 4k@60hz using HDMI2.0, which also lets me easily use other screens when i take my PC away , plus there ain't no 75" curved monitors that big :P !

Well until DP 1.3 is standard and 4k@120hz is possible !

Received my monitor yesterday.

Spent a few hours playing different games.

It's comes setup a bit bright, however sorted out some settings for it.

Came with full set of cables.

Easily setup to 144hz.

Really smooth.

Will get Spyder set up on it at weekend and firm out a decent profile.

Overall can recommend this monitor.
