Cheap 4x4

OK.. So, my 330d is my regular car, my wife has a fiesta.

Im looking for a third car to do minimal milage to use as a beast of burden for towing a trailer to the tip etc. Thinking along the lines of a big old 4x4. Something I intend to never wash, ans do minimal maintenance on, that will be dirt cheap to buy and run.

Wanting to spend no more than about 4k second hand. Thinking maybe a freelander or jeep cherokee

Any suggestions tips or ideas?

Honda CRV if you don't want mega off road performance. Much more reliable than the Freelander.

And does it need to be a 4x4? You can get plenty of decent smaller cars that are then easy to shift on to someone as a first car in a year or two with little loss. I regularly have a 3rd car which is a Polo or Fiesta at 7 or 8 years old. All of them have been totally reliable and easy to sell on. Current is a 2007 Polo bought this year with only 46k miles, one owner, full VW s/history and very very well cared for.

Freelander....didn't they have engine headgasket sisues (assuming we're talking older ones given the budget)? Personally I'd avoid.

Personally I'd go Jap. Not particularly luxurious, but do tend to run forever.

- Nissan Terrano (or possibly Navaro if budget allows?)
- Mitsubishi Pajero
- Toyota Landcruiser
- Toyota Rav4

Toyota Hilux or Mitsubishi L200? Don't have to put shit in the car then....can go on the back.

Great vehicle my folks had one, but only three available nationally on Auto Trader and I haven't seen one on the road for years. Older Jeeps are cheap, pretty simple and easy to maintain.

That's the key but for an older jeep type vehicle.

It needs easy access for maintenance.

Older vehicles like older people need more looking after and a bit of tlc at times.

They also make the odd mess on the floor as well
