340i Golf Tee Mod?

Hi all,

I've searched a few variations "exhaust valve" and "golf tee mod" etc. for the 340i

Can you do this as you could on the 335i?

Well I have looked, and the left hand side has an actuator, but I can't see a vacuume hose. Just an electric plug. I unplugged it but it still had only one side working.

The car was cold, not sure if that makes a difference?

Sounds like they've changed from vacuum to electronic activation of the valve. So it's a whole different kettle of fish.

I bet the yanks will work it out soon, have you searched in the other sections?

Yes I googled it and looked through lots of threads but most lead to 335i info.

Also when I plugged it back in it beeped at me the cheeky fcuker.

I wonder if it's possible to "code" it open all the time.

When replacing my 320i back box with a 328i box I had the flap welded open. I had no electronics to plug in though so the car didn't throw any warnings at me.
Don't know if you could weld the flap open and hope it doesn't scream at you.

It's vacuum operated isn't it so how could it be coded?

On the M3/4 you can unplug the electrics clip near the exhaust for the valve (do it while in sport) and it stays 'meaty'.

You can do exactly this, I did find that even in sport mode, there were times that the flap wasn't open, but after a decent drive in sports mode, the flap remained open when I stopped so I unplugged it. It's been that way since the second day of ownership.

No Error Codes go off when this occurs?

My 435i is the same, just unplug it in sport+ when the valve is fully open.

When does it open? When the car is up to temperature?

Cozy I did that on my driveway, put it into sport plus and unplugged it.

So as a newbie, wondered what this post was all about.

A quick Google and loads and loads of posts found ..... now I'm enlightened ..... slightly louder exhaust note below 3000 rpm with lots of debate about impact on mpg, power etc etc

I'd be interested to try this when I get my 340i in March. Once I've got the car, I'd be grateful for a bit more info on where/what to unplug and anything I'd need to do ... eg what to do with the unplugged cable ?

You have to unplug it when the valve is actually open. You can clearly see it on the left tailpipe, this image shows it:

And here's the look from underneath:

I'd be very surprised if it does anything other than make a bit more noise. Basically makes it sound more purposeful in comfort mode and ensures at low RPMs in sport mode that it continues. BTW, the exhaust/engine does something else in sports mode too - it's noticeably more loud and 'burbly', it's not just the exhaust valve at the back that causes the differences between comfort and sport.

Yes sport plus allows burbles on the overrun. You can hear the difference at standstill just revving in neutral, but under load when on the move its much more noticeable. Sounds pretty good.

With the "golf tee" style mod it (if the same as my previous cars) just lets a bit more sound free at low rpms. Definitely no noticeable increase in power or responsiveness but sounds a lot better.

As a no cost modification I'd absolutely recommend it.

Now that I know it's possible I'll get it working next Saturday morning.

Cheers guys.

Mine burbles a lot in sport mode, I don't think it changes again in sport+

Thanks for the photos.

Guess it will be obvious once looking underneath my car when it arrives, but I assume the connector you need to unplug is close to the valve ?

Once unplugged, do you need to secure the cable or cover the open end to stop cr@p getting into it ?

Unless you want crap to get in it, I'd suggest you over both. I sealed mine with insulation tape. Last thing I want is water and grime getting into electrical contacts.
