Anyone with a BMS Stage 1 get a good 0-60 time?

I'm not really the 'boy racer' type that enjoys seeing how often I can go through a tank of gas, a set of tires and run an engine into an early grave.... not to mention collecting tickets.. but I'm also not an old fuddy-duddy either- I actually rather enjoy catching red lights at intersections

BMW lists the 60 time for the 228 at 5.4s. Some of the documentation for the BMS piggyback says a 328i can manage a 4.9s with the tune. Regardless, after 10k miles curiosity got the best of me and I wanted to know how close I was to those numbers. So today on a lonesome stragiht stretch of highway with no other cars in sight, I performed a highly unscientific test.

I got out my phone, turned on the stopwatch function, came to a dead stop and then hit the big red START button and floored it. (in auto, SPORT+) I watched the speedo and as soon as it hit 60 I looked down at my phone and it was at something like 4.78 or 4.79 and as I looked back up it hit 4.8.

Was this a fluke? Did I have a tailwind? Has anyone here with a 228i and a BMS S1 gotten a solid reading at the track or anything?

It's no land speed record or anything, but for a 4 banger that's mechanically bone-stock with the exception of the $350 piggyback tune that's pretty damn good, IMO

I didn't at all expect a 4.7xx, especially without really even trying and spinning up the turbo before launch or anything at all. Color me happy

You started and stopped the watch manually while you were the driver?

So how did you start and stop the timer to measure your 0 - 60 ?

Reading is fundamental. This isn't rocket surgery.

1. I clearly stated I was at a "dead stop" when I started the stopwatch, did I not? Did I say I was holding it in my hands? It was sitting in the seat. I don't know what kind of phone you use, but mine only needs be touched on the screen to start the stopwatch feature and doesn't need to be held in the hands for the stopwatch to continue running. WTF?

2. where'd you get the idea I bothered to stop the timer at all? ON the contrary, if you ready my post, I just glanced down at it to see the time on it. How could it have continued running from 4.7xx to 4.8xx "as I looked back up". How the hell would the stopwatch be still running if I'd bothered to stop it? I had no need to to stop it and I didnt bother. I'm not an Olympic official timing the gold medal round of the 110m hurdles. Just glancing at the phone for 0.15s was all the information I was looking for. Why would I even bother?

If you're looking to make me into some reckless driver that was driving with my kness while spanking it to boobs on the mobile version of tumblr while playing Candy Crush and texting you on Grindr you're barking up the wrong tree, dude. Look elsewhere.

This is the exact place I drove up to within 10MPH of the speed limit with no one else in sight for a whole 5 seconds. Any other questions?

I drove 60 in a 70... with a smartphone in my passenger seat. You should probably alert the authorities.

My questions has nothing to with whether you are a safe driver or not. You are an adult and you can make these decision by urself.

I was just asking to see how accurate is the method you used to get your times

4.7 seems a bit optimistic I think. A quick 335 tuned runs about that I thought. Any test/tune nights in Texas that you can hit up and run it at the track for a true number? That's always fun

Hm, I was thinking since its possible to do 4.9 with a stock 228 AT (right?) with a tune shaving .1 or .2 off wouldn't be impossible right? I know his time probably wasn't the most accurate but perhaps within a few .0x. Close enough for government work.

Honestly I have always figured a lightly optioned tuned 228 AT is as fast as a stock 335 AT 0-60. They are heavy.

Hah, i was waiting to see how this would play out As a side note, i'm sure there are lots of "unattended" 0-60 timer apps out there.

Then we're basically asking the same question. I know my method was hardly ideal and was hoping someone had a more reliably obtained number with a same or similarly configured car to chime in.

Well, even with my imprecise methodology it wasn't a 4.7... it was a 4.8 as it rolled over as I flicked my glance down at the phone., but still I guess that's just splitting hairs

as a side note, I tried the same run at exactly the same place a couple days ago and got a 6.1 WHISKEY. TANGO. FOXTROT!?!?!

...then I realized I was still in COMFORT mode with no traction control. Derrrrp!

I know there are plenty of places to track cars in Texas, but to be honest that's not really my scene, Nothing wrong with it but since I am at least partially a "fuddy duddy" I know that if something went wrong, my insurance wouldn't cover my car at a track. I can afford to pay my bills, but I don't at all have room in my budget to eat the cost of a 2016 BMW if it were to get trashed at a track.

Published 0-60 tests: Edmunds 5.1, Car & Driver 4.9, Motor Trend 5.0, Road & Track 5.2. Given the usual BMW overstated speedometers and the method used -- yes it's reasonable.

I think it's very much worth it and you won't be disappointed.

I still don't know what's the most "RIGHT" number for the 60MPH run is for my car (and tbh, it doesn't really matter that much to me), but I can certainly tell you that the car is noticeably quicker and pulls harder over 2k when the turbo spins up.

At full throttle the car gets some wiggle in the butr now that it never did before the BMS tune. I'm still a fuddy duddy though and spend 99 percent of my time in the right hand lane in cruise control.

I ran my old DD at the track for 5 years/seasons...since they're not blazingly fast, you'd have to be really not paying attention to hurt the car from my experience. I had it slideways a few times and scared my friends who were watching from the stands but behind the wheel I never ever thought I was going to hit anything. The best part is it answers the 0-60,1/4 mile question etc with an accurate timer and in a safe place. I haven't run my GC yet..but I will...just for kicks.
