Question What are those elastic straps in the trunk used for?

Did some searching, but no answer found...

What are those two rectangular elastic straps found on the sides of the trunk useful for?

they are there to secure something you don't want flying around inside your trunk, maybe a set of jumper cables, emergency kit, bottle of oil..

I used it to strap the mother-in-law, when she gets out of hand.

Another thread suggested the owner's manual fits in the right strap of the sedan.

It's for your spare quart of oil.

BMW even sells a zippered bag just for this purpose and this location.

In Canada I beleive the quart of oil comes in a bag with Valcro to stick it on , we don't get the strap here or at least I did not...

Glad I'm not the only one... although I keep a few bottles of oil in the storage compartment in the trunk (under the floor lid) and use the strap for quick detailer spray.
