340i Courtesy Car

So while my 320d xd is in for some warranty work my good friend and salesman has hooked me up with a 340i touring for the day (or two) and BLOODY HELL what a car!

Rough spec
Auto - as mine is manual - the more i use the auto, the more i like it!
HK Audio
Online entertainment
Panoramic roof
Pro Nav
etc etc etc

So far averaged 30mpg on my work commute (compared to 51mpg in the 320d). Its very refined to drive and i actually think i prefer the s-drive as opposed to x-drive, it feels so much more planted and actually has the power to pull you out of the corners! I am planning to have the ACS springs fitted to my xd, do we all feel these will give me the same/ similar handling? It really is an absolute rocket ship!

Anything anyone wants me to try/ know before I give it back?

I assume it's got adaptive suspension ? Does your Xd have adaptive ?

If there is a difference there, then that would explain a lot of the 'planted' feel.

My xD doesn't have adaptive no. Plus the 340 is sD so RWD which sits lower etc...

Sounding really dense now, how can i tell if it has adaptive?

Your post is bang on point. Those of us with 340's will smile as we had the same reaction when we drove ours. Seriously fast and more planted than the xdrive. Apart from the steering being, well, 3 series so somewhat vague it's hard to fault.

Can't agree more, blisteringly fast! Yet so comfortable! Effortless power

If you change from Comfort to Sport mode via the button on the centre console you'll feel the suspension firm-up if the car has adaptive; you might also get a pretty graphic on the sat-nav screen which shows the dampers and steering in red to signify Dynamic Driving (or words to that effect!).

Your dealer is very generous with their courtesy cars, I usually have to make do with a 1-series when mine goes in (although to be fair I've never pestered them for anything better!).

I just went and checked, and on the screen, you can go to vehicle settings, and select 'chassis and engine' or these individually, so I would guess this is adaptive?

Oh yes, like I said, I have a good friend who works there, and owe the salesman who has this car a drink!

Take it from me it has quite a bit more torque, the 340i is quite diesel like in also accessing it very low in the rev range.

The 340i has a lot more torque. 450nm as opposed to 400nm for the 320d

That's 37 ft lbs difference.

Yes very good - thing is I do 80 miles each day, so it'll get expensive very quickly! If only, maybe if i sell my weekend car!

I would say it unofficially has more than that. The probably not that accurate power dials show 350ft lb on mine with 270miles on the clock. Plus peak torque is at a very derv like 1340rpm, its just you then have another 5500 rpm to play with!

After a few days of owning one I can safely say I'm in love with that engine. If I'm driving slowly somewhere then its stereo on mute and window down.
I no longer look at mpg as its smiles per gallon. (and as I do a lot of short trips with lots of constant acceleration you can imagine the mpg!)

Indeed but even more importantly is how long the 340i sustains lots of torque, the 320d makes 400nm for a fleeting 750rpm the 340i makes 450nm for 3620rpm or nearly x5 longer.

Lots of people on here concentrate on the peak torque numbers, but it's pretty meaningless without looking at the rev band over which it's produced.

Agree, it is what is under the headline torque, the whole torque curve that matters. The N55 is a brilliant engine, the linear way it delivers makes for a very flexible engine, whether you are simply in slow flowing traffic, driving moderately, or really working the engine. The B58 can only be better, waiting to try one to feel the difference.
