Fuel additives

Do any of you guys use fuel additives? I like to add some STP cleaner every now and then but it's probably a force of habit as it doesn't do anything to clean the valves on a direct injection engine.

Anyone use anything that they find actually works and is not just snake oil?

No reason for it since most major branded gas contains the techroline additive already in it. I think there were a few guys adding more on their own..but for the most part, I think you're good. I wouldn't run STP in our cars for anything..lol.

Its just techron...which is in all the major gasoline brands courtesy of Chevron. Can't hurt, probably won't help...

Yep, as long as your gas is Top Tier, it should have all the detergent that your engine needs. Sometimes I use QT and wonder about it, but seems to be good cheap gas. Run Shell when I can though.

Most of the carbon build up these days seems to be sticky. Wonder if the ethanol is the culprit. No matter though, our car's engines were built to run using the stuff without causing damage.

I don't and wouldn't use any fuel additives in any of my cars: even ones that aren't direct injected. I certainly wouldn't use STP in any car... As others have suggested, stick to Shell, Chevron, Costco, or any of your favorite top tier gas companies and you will be fine (at least for awhile). Adding crap like STP or dog shit to your fuel tank or crankcase is just asking for trouble.

BMW supply their own 'approved' fuel additives these days, UK part numbers are:

BMW Fuel Additives
83 19 2 296 922 BMW Group Diesel additive
83 19 2 183 738 BMW Group Petrol additive

Uses one of the world's most advanced detergent additives manufactured by BASF from the Kerocom/Keropur range. (I've seen reference to Kerocom PIBA 03).

Due to the complexity and precision of our injection systems, Deposit Control Additives (DCAs) are now a key ingredient of a decent fuel additive package, whether in the fuel at source, or added when pumping fuel. We may benefit from added doses if we sense any engine running issues.

Having lived with diesel engines where fuel additive packages can greatly improve efficiency, particularly long term, I though I'd try the BMW additive in my N55 engine, when the injectors were starting to tick a bit. One shot for a tank, within half a tank's use, the injectors were back to almost silence when running hot. I'd expect the 'extra' cleaning to help them run more smoothly.

I use Esso or BP fuels which claim to have good additive packages, but I'll use the BMW additive again, when I hear the injectors changing note.

I use one of this every 5,000 km, previous to the engine oil change, as BMW recommends...

Not sure if that BMW additive is sold in the US.

Can someone confirm? If it is sold here and not overly expensive, I'd use it since the manufacturer cleared it.
