Question: Front Colision Warning
I have the front collision warning in my '12 335. It's set to the longest setting I believe, and a few times when it's going off to notify me there has been a beeping / audible notification along with the flashing red car in the dash and HUD. Is this supposed to happen all the time or is it just if there's an imminent collision detected for extra warning? I don't know how to go about testing this or if there's some malfunction? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

The best way to test is to just go screaming up behind a line of traffic without applying the brakes. You'll soon find out if it's working correctly.

Seriously though, what you describe sounds correct. I know with mine it only happens with a "imminent" collision.
I adjust mine to the closest setting and it usually only comes on when someone I am following slows to go around a corner and I go passed them. |

But, they also signal when the car in front of you is slowing down. This is what makes the system brilliant. The only way for your eyes to know if the car in front of you has slowed down is when the apparent size of the vehicle in front of you rear end increases. If you are directly behind the car then you only get a two dimensional view. This can be hard to see a rectangle increasing in size, especially at night. Meanwhile, the HUD will display a warning telling you the car in front of you is reducing speed. You must compensate. Early versions can apply braking. But, some versions do not brake. |

By default mine came set to "long" and I changed it to "medium" since it was coming on too much. Maybe set it to short instead of long if the alerts are too frequent.
I ordered ZDA Driver Assistance Package and ZDB Driver Assistance Plus Package on my 340i. I was on the fence with ZDB but the alerts have certainly saved me from certain doom and paid for itself. I have certainly had the brakes automatically applied a few times too, mostly at lights when the car in front of me stops short. |

Just remember that it does NOT detect a car that is standing still, Try aiming for a parked car and you will see. But I have noticed that sometimes it actually detects some stationary objects like a traffic island (is that the correct name?) etc. But it has never reacted to a stationary car like if I am coming up to a line of cars that have been sitting in front of a red light for a while, it doesnt sense them. I have the ACC .

My drive home includes a winding section of road where cars are parked and it goes off all the time. I now turn it off along this section as I was s nearly run up the back of me when it kicked in. |

What year and model do you have, and what options exactly?
