Where is this M2 market headed?

The car is hot and going 15k+ over list but production is relatively low. At what point will the dealer markup madness end?

It is hard to tell but I think things won't settle down until next year. The demand is still extremely high and a new wave of orders have begun.

I do believe that you can still get a car for MSRP if you stumble upon one of the honorable dealers that happens to get one in.

I'm pretty sure I can pick one up for 5k below MSRP in a couple of months since production is " not limited ". :

It's going 15k over in extreme rare cases. The vast majority are going for MSRP.

BMW will make as many as they can sell as they are desperately trying to hold on the luxury sales crown. Deals are on the horizon.

after a year it'll go down to M3/4 style...maybe a little longer waits-- couple in stock, if you want to order maybe 4-5 months guaranteed

Keep in mind the first cars just hit the lots. The markup and frenzy is normal. If I were BMW i'd be more concerned about who will buy the non-convertible M235i. Currently it starts at nearly $12k more than the 228i, but really isn't far off from the M2.

Since production isn't limited. My guess is that in 6 months to a year MSRP will be the norm.

Here in Sweden, orders are into early 2019 if not sold out. In the UK they are totally sold out, im sure some other markets are as well. IMO you cant compare the M2 with the M4. M2 will hold value better.

Another delusional M4 owner who clearly has not tried to buy an M2.

I hope he/she realizes that the car is selling well into 2018 and is actually SOLD OUT in some markets such as UK.

Dealers asking for 10 or 15k over MSRP isn't the same as them actually selling for that amount. I would be pretty shocked if many if any are actually selling for that because the OP correctly points out that cars can be had for MSRP. 10k is certainly enough to justify a phone call to an out of state dealer and paying some shipping costs to have it delivered. I don't think we can judge where the market will go by the first few weeks of availability. Just about every new hot car there are always dealers and customers willing to both charge and pay over MSRP but those days are usually quite limited. The I8 being a great example, people were losing their minds and paying way over MSRP until supply caught up with demand less than a year into production and then prices plunged. I can't think of any regular production car that was able to maintain pricing over MSRP for very long. My local dealer has already gone from 10k over MSRP to 5k over and they have only received their second car (I am pretty sure they didn't get the 10k over on the first) so if there was a crazy demand we would see markups going in the other direction. I suspect there are a fairly small but very enthusiastic number of buyers who want one of these cars ASAP and as pretty desperate to get one. BMW will build these cars for several years so everyone who wants one will get one. Even with the 1M there was plenty of cars at MSRP for the customers willing to make the phone calls and do a road trip.

There are currently 5 M4s on the lot at the dealer near me.

That will never be the case for the M2, not at any point of its production run

Not 5K but some people have gotten 2K or more already. USAA $1500 plus $500 BMWCCA = $2,000 or ED 5% = $2785 + $500 BMWCCA = $3,285. Not sure if you can stack the $1500 for USAA on top of ED $2,785 and the BMWCCA $500 but potentially $4,785 if you can stack all 3.

I kept finding left over 2015 M4 at huge discounts when I was looking for M3. I sure hope we never get to that point on the M2.

M4 wasn't popular to begin with compared to M3.

Not that hard to search the forums.

By the way, call around and see if you can find one, just one, dealer with a customer car available for 2016 or 2017. Let us know what you come up with.

So few people on this board are actually BMW CCA members. Plus they would have to have a full year of membership prior to ordering the M2 to be eligible. But I guess for those prospective 2017 owners ... There is still time

Not sure what the USAA discount is, but again, doesn't sounds like it's common to more than about 15-20 percent of people if it's via USAA insurance, that's also a member organization and in the case of USAA ( unlike BMW CCA) there are also eligibility requirements to even become a member.

if you can collect all those discounts though, more M Power to you!

By the way , the CCA offer is a rebate , so it's not coming off of MSRP. ED does count.

I do want to see a true 5K off of MSRP deal !

While I agree that M2 probably won't be plentiful for the next year, there's still a possibility they'll ramp up production more after the first year. Will just have to wait and see. Also don't forget the LCI in 2018 and on to a projected EOP 2020.

The country you're in makes a difference too. Most of us are talking about the US. Canada and UK are in a different situation unfortunately.

To OPher02k

CosmosMpower was able to impressively find multiple cars available in a short period of time IN THE US. So get on a list now if you haven't and if you find yourself wanting the car now, get on the phone around the first week of each month and call dealers around and not around you. Chances are you'll find MSRP

The car came out less than a month ago, of course cars are hard to come by NOW but they won't be hard to come by FOREVER. Dealers always get low allocations when a new car is out but as time passes production increases and demand declines. Saying that the car will be sold out for the next 2 years is completely bogus.

Look at the Cayman GT4, Porsche advertised it as a limited run car and when it first came out the demand was HOT, everybody wanted one and the going rate was $15k over msrp, now that almost a year has gone by dealers have multiple sitting on their showroom floor
