IND Rip Off - Key Case to Canada

So I was looking to buy an M Performance key case for my upcoming M2 from IND and found this little fun nugget of bullshit.

Like seriously guys? $130 to ship a f*cking key case? The key case costs $49 USD and weighs MAYBE half a pound. I guess they want to profit by charging stupid shipping costs and hoping no one notices.

Guess IND is off of my list of business I will be buying M2 parts from.

Yeah as someone who lives in Europe, shipping is too expensive to buy from Ind.

I paid 17 for shipping for the front reflectors and I thought that was ridiculous...

First of all, why not pick the $40 ship version? Second, they ship UPS and UPS builds in the taxes and brokerage fees...so it's not just "shipping". My Bavsound stuff cost me $108 CAD to get it to Toronto. Is what it is.

IND is one of the most reputable companies I've dealt with concerning auto accessories. Blame UPS for the cost of expedited shipping. On the other hand, I don't think they're too concerned about losing your business.

Because it makes no sense. The key case weighs less than half a pound including the box. There is no reason whatsoever it should cost $40.

As a matter of fact, I priced it out myself using UPS and it came to less than $25 so I would love to know where the extra cost is going.

I would except UPS quoted me just $25 for the shipment when I called them for a quote. So I would love to know why the extra cost.

Also, I am sure IND doesn't need my business, but that sort of attitude is what lets companies like this charge $40 for regular shipping on a key case that weighs less than half a pound.

If UPS quoted you $25 (US presumably) I doubt it included duties, taxes and brokerage fees so you'd still be looking at roughly $50US to ship it to the east coast at a minimum. In any case, as you pointed out, if you're not happy with the shipping costs you don't need to buy it.

As an aside, I've rarely had a shipping cost I could get on board with when importing from the States. In the end, I buy or I don't. Depends how badly I want the product. For example, my Dinan CAI cost me an additional $150 for shipping, duties, brokerage fees but I wanted the product.

My 2 cents.

The item is under $50, which makes it tax exempt, so I wouldn't pay duties.

And yeah I know what you mean about shipping from US...fortunately I'm about an hour away from a border town, and there is a store that offers a PO Box for Canadians to ship there and go pick up in person. Might hit them up for a quote and see if it's cheaper.

Alternatively, with the dollar conversion and shipping, it may actually be cheaper to order from the dealership - I've inquired about pricing already.

Cross border mailbox sounds like a good alternative.

They offer something similar in Buffalo, but still an hour+ drive & insane traffic for me so I never pursued the option.

Couldn't have said it any better. Nothing against IND, might not even be their fault for the huge shipping costs but that sentence is so true.

I bought mine from amazon for $50 and free shipping. Might want to try that route. BTW the blue anodized bolt that holds everything together broke after 3 days of use. Sheared the head right off.

I ship to canada all the time for work, I ship 1.2lb items and it is about $40. Those prices are not that far off to be honest.

The whole thing with the box weighs 200g and would easily fit in a $15 prepaid envelope. These shipping costs are ridiculous.

Hi guys, thought I'd pop in to discuss.

A few items to consider:
  • The website uses an automated shipping calculator that relies on an algorithm generated by UPS. Calculated costs include the cost to ship as well as the packaging costs.
  • We leave the "will call-contact me for shipping options" box available, specifically to give our web clients the ability to discuss shipping options with an IND representative. We understand that international shipping can be costly, and are happy to help in any way possible. If a shipping rate does not make sense, it's always possible to reach out to IND directly. Sometimes our representatives can find an alternate shipping solution that lowers costs.
  • At IND, safe packaging is a priority. Simply shipping the item is not enough- it has to arrive safely at the client's door, in all possible conditions. That means that where a normal end user could ship an item like a key fob in a small shipping pouch, we cannot do that at IND as it's simply not a reliable means of transport. The pouch could tear open, the key case could get crushed, etc... IND therefore always uses a box for every single item we ship, regardless of size. Although an envelope pouch may get a key case safely to the end user 40-60% of the time, that success rate is not acceptable for us. We strive to achieve a perfect shipping record.

Unfortunately, from the outside looking in something like shipping a key case looks quite simple, but the realities of business make even international transport of a part like that somewhat more complex. Where an end user can cut corners or avoid safety measures, a business like IND cannot, especially given that our business model is built around being the top level vendor in our industry.

I hope that sheds some light on the issue!

I'll close this with the statement that if a shipping rate is not satisfactory, please do contact one of our sales representatives directly and we will do whatever we can to help.

There is no such thing as a $15 prepaid envelope to Canada. $23.95 for the smallest one with zero packaging at all, not counting duties, etc.

I was told for those that live close to the border that there are warehouse companies or something on the US side that take delivery for you. I guess like a PO box. The person I talked to said he uses it for his Amazon orders?

Why you didn't get the key case from the dealership? They have it...

Price mostly. Things in Canada are overpriced.

I eventually got my dealership to give me one for free

In my experience, UPS gouges.
I try to avoid involving them if at all possible.

I was to order some parts for my LBB M2 (in order) from Ind too but when I saw their ridiculously high shipping prices I deceided to forget it. It is a shame because I was to order for more than $600 USD in parts, which is nearly $800 in our canadian monkey money...
