M2 vs 997 Carrera S
I know there are a ton of Porsche guys on this forum. What are the pro's and cons of the 997? also which one would you buy m2 or 997?

Hard to say until someone has driven both... you will mainly get speculation
I bet the M2 is competitive (maybe faster) with the 997 in terms of actual performance (lap times) and it has a warranty. It will also have FAR more usable torque for DD which is fun. However, there is something really cool about the Porsche. The biggest downside of the 997, IMO, is the really dated interior but that likely doesn't matter to everyone. I only really liked 911 interiors when the 991 came out.

Haven't driven a M2 but have driven a 997.1 c2s and own a 997 gt3 they are both pretty darn fast and lighter than M2. Turn in is fantastic on the 997, the interiors are way old fashioned and less tech features. I'd rather own a 997.2 c2s than a M2 but not a .1 without the di motor and updates.

M2 is an entry M car according to M
911CS is positioned as a high level sports car in the Porsche range just after the GT 911s Porsche makes sports car, BMW makes sports coupe and saloon The sound and response of that 3.8 alone makes it a winner, not to mentioned the unique RR layout |

I have driven a 997S thoroughly because I wanted one. Build quality 'feel' is uncomparable, engine is nice, more than enough torque down low, compared to the E90 M3 6MT I eventually chose(2 kids) , but/and the steering feel is typically 911: Speedboatlike, light upfront because there's nothing there. That's also my point of me not having a normal 911rwd . That feel /behaviour. I;ve driven a few awd 911s and they are more 'balanced' there is weight upfront offcourse. But I don't want awd unless it's a 991 Turbo S or something equal.
My verdict: Great sportscar in many ways, icon, but just not for me. And M2 will be the faster more practical car(also on track this is 'just' a 997S, still fast enough no worries) and I like the M2 looks better(base 997 looks bland imho, but hey 997GT3/991GT3/RS are out of my $$$ league ) Cheers Robin |

The best thing about the 997 is the communicative steering imo.Having had the /1 and having had my fingers burnt badly due to bore scoring I wouldn't touch another, that's not to say it happens to everybody, just that I've been unlucky on both occasions with Porsche.I'm sure there are many happy owners out there though.
Like Robin has mentioned a light front end takes a little bit of acquaintance. I didn't think the low down torque was that amazing and you do have to make full use of the revs to enjoy it.Personally I think Porsches' are an acquired taste, you either get on with them or you don't. What doesn't help is the antique tech, reliability, servicing and general expense that contributes to it's downside,I'm far happier with the idea of having an up to date, more practical performance coupe like the M2 with a new warranty these days that constitutes some sort of sensible pricing structure. In bold:Low down torque compared to the long geared fat pig called E90 M3 6MT And we're talking about an NA engine which needs to be revved offcourse. Cheers Robin |

I went from an e92 m3 zcp to my current m2 and also have an e46 330ci as my daily. I heard the ims issues are fixed on the 997.2. Also I was watching some videos last night cant you do preventative replace the bearing.

I think that the latestet 997.2 has a better set up. Also what are your thoughts compared from the 997 to the 991.1? |

The problems I experienced were with a mk1 or .1 if you will and that was with the bore scoring.Preventative maintenance can be done with the IMS which the .2 doesn't have of course. The engine is completely different with cooling around the cylinder liners being one of the main differences. The cooling issue in the .1 was one of the main culprits to scoring and mods can get done...but it gets tedious. The .2 is a far better car but also more expensive ~£13/15K more expensive in the UK to upgrade to the cheapest .2. Sat nav isn't brilliant and everything is starting to show its age now we're in this digital world and look tired especially the .1,however my original latter comments still remain for whatever model variant you go for. |

I always end up using my phone for my nav so that really doesn't bug me.I agree when I sat in it looked really outdated. It looks like a brand new car until you see that lol. This would be an add to my current cars. I think that I will wait for a bit and get a 997.2 in maybe four years when those prices come down. or do you think it would be better to get a .1 and put the cash in as preventative? |

That's what I was thinking and since I won't be able to get one until I pay off my m2 hopefully 997.2 will go down in price. I feel like everyone will be jumping on the 991.1s because of it being the last na 911

I went 997 to 991 to M2 and going back to 991. I've also recently considering nabbing the 2012 Carrera GTS but their prices are holding way high and you can get nicely optioned 991's for less...

What do you prefer in the 991 vs the 997? Also what did you not like about the m2 to make the switch back?

Yes only 05 C2S had a greater risk for IMS but even 05+ still has a small chance. If you don't want to chance it get a .2 gen which has no IMS bearing at all.

It's really hard to beat the driving experience of having the engine behind the driver. It really comes down to priorities. If you can live with the down sides of a 997 you should take one for a long test drive.
