I know this is an old thread but having the same burning smell in my new 435d with 300 miles on the clock and was told it's DPF regen, but is this going be happening for the life of the car, if so not happy as I don't expect a £50,000 to smell this bad on a regular bases. Thoughts please.

Do some more distance drives at good speeds, then no more bad smells.

I know when mine is doing it's regen, but in 23k smelt it within the car for the first time the other week so it doesn't happen all the time.

Too many short journeys? Diesel cars don't like not getting up to a warm temp. The DPF will quickly clog up and need to burn off all that soot.

As said. Lots of short journeys = DPF needing to do 'active regen', which causes that smell.
Long runs on motorways, where the exhaust system gets up to full temperature = passive regen, no such smell.

Thanks for your input gents, had a long chat with both the service manager and the sales manager today and it seems that BMW have changed the way they have programmed the car to do the regen, instead of doing it on long journeys only it's now doing it on short trips and the smell is likely to occur for the first couple of thousand miles and then the smell will tail off, this information will be going into the hand book sometime next year. so will be interesting to see what happens.

Do you know from year they done this change ? Guess they had to do if as a lot of customers purchase diesel not thinking that its not mean for shirt journeys and obviously bmw wont say anything.
