MotherFU*KER! Cracked Windshield
A nice big rock decided to kiss my windshield this morning after it flew off some random landscaping truck. Wonderful.
Never had a cracked windshield to replace. Anyone have any pointers on who or where I can go to replace - and how much this will rape me for? Thanks. |

Call your insurance, it should be covered. Although I think you will have to fight them to get an OEM windshield. (The 3rd party replacement windshields are usually covered for the life of the vehicle.)
The good news is that it can be done on-site. The repair guy comes out with the truck and tools and is done in 30minutes, he will even transfer the inspection sticker.

I dreamed once of being in front of one of those trucks and releasing a BRICK to land on their windshield... sorry... I drifted into my fantasies. What about the rear view mirror/rain sensor? Do they move the unit from the old windshield to the new one?

BTW, how big is your crack... the windshield crack you pervert.
If small enough, it could be repaired. But you need to act fast. Else, it could start to expand and get too big.

Umm ... The crack is about two inches, but it's already spidered a bit - not just one clean line |

I would assume they reuse the current one, unless it's fused to the glass. (too much coffee)

I had mine done at safelite, Geico works with them. Geico will try to convince you to go with an aftermarket alternative but you can definitely insist for 'OEM dealer glass' as they call it. The windshield (OEM or aftermarket) will come with the new rain/light sensors built in. What's not on the glass (and something to remind them) is the condensation sensor, its something they have to pick up at a dealership. Otheriwise its pretty much straightforward. I have observed no compromises in seals (liquid or air) since the replacement...

Frank, the sensors you see i.e. rain and light sensor, cannot be transferred. They are part of the windshield assembly. The replacements come with them (doesn't matter OEM or aftermarket). There is also a condensation sensor (works with the HVAC) that needs to be replaced...

Keep in mind not all insurance on glass is the same. My carrier only covers glass in VA as comprehensive (thus I got stuck w/my deductible), not offering a separate glass policy. That being said they didn't give me any crap about an OEM windshield (on the porsche).
But let me know who you use and what you pay as I found last week my windshield on the BMW is cracked the entire length at the bottom below the wipers :/ Score another one for the rocks...

Just had a crack "repaired" by Safelite (Baltimore City). They sucked ass...didn't do the repair correctly, and the crack has since expanded. They warranty their work and would cover my portion of insurance deductible for replacement. Unfortunately, I have a $1000 deductible and the replacement is less than $500....

When I broke mine last month I took it to Passport BMW cost 496.27 installed with CCA discount. They used the OEM Securit (sp?)windshield instead of the soft Pilkington. My SA is Stephen Heath.

Yes I do believe factory is Pilkington just like the sides and back glass. I wasn't aware that they were perhaps more brittle than the Sekurit glass. Btw, this was discussed before, but E90Fleet once opined that our windshields are brittle (prone to pitting, cracking etc.) due to the multiple coatings it has on it. Remember that BMW chose to package US cars with their highest spec windshield (climate-comfort) from the factory parts bin.

Mine does have the Roundel. I tried Safelite, but they wanted double what the dealer asked.

I just got off the phone with Geico - Donny I owe you a beer bro. Asked for OEM, mentioned the additional condensation sensor and was good to go!
They said it would take a couple days to source the glass, but Safelite will come out and do the fix next week. BTW, it cost me $50 - glass repair doesn't fall under normal collision, but under mechanical something or other. I didn't really pay attention after she said it was only gonna cost me $50. Sweet! |
