B58 vs. B46 reliability?
I still haven't decided whether I should go with the 230i or M240i. In any case, I might just go with the base model and M/T for either.
One thing I'm still questioning thought is whether the engine in the M240i would be more reliable than the one in the 230i. I heard many times that the N20 was less reliable than the N55. Not sure by how much, by it was more frequent to read about timing chain issues on N20 than N55 for instance. For the new B58/B46, has anything already pointed in favor of B58 being more reliable? I know that they went back with mechanic water pump for M240i, is the same true for 230i? I'm still not convinced if it's worth to pay $10k more for the extra power I won't be using, however between a used 228i and M235i I was going in favor of the M235i mainly due to hearing good things about N55. |

N54 was a Winner - BUT
In 07' the advent of the N54 was met with praise. The internals were great but the HPFP , injectors, thermostat & waterpump, oil filter housing gaskets and the dreaded DI intake issues related to poor oil control down the valve stems were just a part of ownership. I still loved my 07' 335i MT.
. . The B58 is a really great performer that is only going to get better over time. A 2018 B58 M240i would be CHOICE. |

And I think those awards don't take into consideration the overall durability of the engine... I guess I'm asking too soon. It's way too early to compare the reliability of those engines... |
