Happy with your 340i Manual Shift?

OK, so I have a 340i 6MT on order and have been reading of some synchro failure issues with this box (but moreso on the pre LCI 335's)

I'd love to hear from owners who are happy with this box after a good few (thousand) miles!

I dig it. The rev-matching is kinda nice too. Maybe not as fun as heel-toe'ing it, but it's smooth.

Yeah I'm looking forward to trying the rev matching, never had it before!

I noticed one of your previous cars was an auto but you came back to manual, which I'd have thought was quite unusual. I take it you prefer manual to auto or was it just to do with cost?

At first I scoffed at the rev-matching since heel-toe is just so satisfying, but man.. the rev matching is actually pretttttty nice

the rev matching is rad. Sometimes I still forget it does it though, and I attempt to myself.

Sounds all good... I currently rev match manually but someone else has said that if you still do it you simply override the system and won't notice any difference which is good, but it's always nice to have a bit of help. I was tempted by the sport auto as the test cars were all auto, but whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the test drive, I just think after a few days of driving an auto I'd start to wish my left arm and foot could be more involved (not to mention the extra wedge I will save as auto is a huge cost option in the UK!!)

Absolutely love mine!! I had a 2008 M3 6sp and after 105K miles, decided to get a used 2012 M3 DCT in 2014 until I decided what I wanted/needed to get next. Never truly liked that car. And I think it was the DCT..sure it was nice and could shift quicker than me, but I absolutely love driving a manual. This one is good and as many have said, the rev matching feature is pretty cool. I only have about 1400 miles on my car so far, so still fairly new, but I look forward to my commute now, something that I really haven't been able to say for the last 2+ years.

Funny story there. After my 2004 325 with MT (which I loved), I thought it would be a good idea to just try something else, so I got a 2007 Acura TSX. Nice car, but I hated the torque steer of FWD and I just constantly missed my 3'er. I'd get sad every time I saw one on the road. So, after having the TSX for only 3 months, I found myself back at the BMW dealership and was just like, "Give me whatever you've got, just get me back into a 3!" All they had on the lot were AT's and I was already eating it financially getting out of an Acura lease 3 months into it.

So I drove off with a bare-bones 2007 328i AT in a color I didn't even really like, but DAMN did it feel good to be back in a 3-series. As soon as that lease was up though, I got my ass back in a proper MT!

This is good to hear. I'm moving from an E90 M3 to a 340i - both 6MT - and one of the main reasons is I want a smoother daily driver. Also, on the track I never quite got the heal-toe thing just right with the M3. I've loved the M3 but it's the right time for an F30.

Just over 1500 miles on mine and it is mostly smooth. However, on some shifts, the box is notchy and will kick back when I'm going into gear. Not enough to actually kick it out of gear, but gives enough resistance that it's not as smooth as normal. Will keep an eye on it.

5K on mine, no issues, it's not the best transmission feel wise but what choice do you have? I don't like the rev matching, GM does way better job. since I double when I downshift it's not really useful for me.

I agree, if you're a manual man (or woman) it's the only choice if you otherwise love the 3er. My F30 320d box certainly wasn't a deal breaker and could be notchy at times, but from experience so can any manual box! Every MT has a character of it's own and you just get used to it. I'm just wondering whether the MT in a petrol will feel any different to that in a diesel, I guess there's no reason it should!?

Love My f30 with awd and the 6 speed, also had the m power and sound pkg added at 167 miles..big difference in the sport modes.. eco and comfort are the same.
The throw is a little long for my driving, but not bad.
The rev matching.. is kinda weird, all of my cars have been manual shift- i do downshift in certain situations, the rev matching defeats the purpose.. but still trying to get used to it

we also picked up a 2017 f31 with the sport package.. its the B48 with the auto- it drives soo nice... wish you could get it in the 340i vers in the states- with manual (which no one gets )

Best 6MT i've driven overall - super smooth. Notchy when cold, but never had a 6MT that wasn't.

Clutch is easy. My old Supra turbo was like a truck clutch. This one is super easy.

No issues to date with 12k miles

Yeah even my Caymans superb box is notchy when cold but super smooth once warm! Clutch on that is the heaviest I've ever experienced though, so although it has a great action when driving fast, it's a nightmare in slow traffic. Glad to hear the F30 clutch is fairly light! Can't wait to get mine!

The new manual gearbox is great. Mine was slightly notchy into 2nd gear but seems to have smoothed out.
