VXR8 (G8 GT here) Vs. BMW M5 - Top Gear

This was a little comparo on Top Gear with the VXR8 which is the G8 GT here in the US without the DOD (displacement on demand) hardware and the LS2 camshaft instead of the L76 unit) which yeilds 414 bhp instead of our detuned 365. It does have the G8 GXP brakes, suspension, ect that will show up here in Oct. That one comes with the LS3, non-DOD motor good for 430 horse on premium fuel and tunable to 450 with ease.

**************************car-videos-08...Pontiac-G8.htm

I like how it was only 3/10s slower around the wet road course then the 911 Turbo . . . Hmmm, they can handle.

Enjoy

80 views and no posts. It is a good video, like most of the Top Gear stuff.

It's nice to see GM come back to RWD platforms like the Zeta platform.

Love the G8 but it is natural competitor to cars like the ISF or even the M3 because of the power.

They should make a coupe version of the G8 GT.

Didn't Autocar just do a straight line test with the C63, M3, and the VXR8 and it came in last?

Not even. This is a IS350/335i competitor it looks like. The VVXR8 could barely manage 0-60 in less then 5 seconds. The G8 can't manage a 0-60 under 5.3 seconds, where as IS350/335i both can dip under 5. Add the fact that the G8 will never be on par handlingwise, and you got yourself a Pontiac (without taking in consideration of driving pleasure/feel which will most certainly be lacking).

More on the brand bashing, the G8 is just a redesign of an existing car. I refuse to buy cars that are just 'retouched' for the market. Have you driven a Grand Prix lately? That car alone will make sure you will never buy a Pontiac ever in your life.

If I went by what I had driven in the past I would have bought another Mustang (the '91 I have is SOLID).

The G8 GXP will be more the M5 competition with the LS3. The VXR versions have taller final drive ratios for better high speed cruising where as here they are shorter for better acceleration. The Monaro had a 3.23 final drive and the GTO came with the 3.46 (same as the Z06).

A tuned G8 GT just went 13.1 at 107. Not to shabby for the L76.

Just add a Callaway Magnacharger to it and you'll have 580hp. It'll be running low 12's maybe even 11's in the quarter mile.
Oh, and a couple magazines compared the new G8 to a BMW 550i and they said it is a comparable vehicle even though it costs half the price. The G8 is a large car, I've sat in one. No, the materials are not as nice as the BMW, but this car came to play and it does. It handles well and stops well. Maybe not quite as well as the $70K BMW 550, but really close, for $32K.
Also, the G8 is not in the same category as the 3-series or the G35. It's in the 5-series and the 335i and the G35 are both faster than the 550i as well.
Don't get hung up on your badge. I don't buy BMW's because of the badge. I'm embarrassed by many people who do so. I buy a BMW because I'm a car enthusiast and give credit where credit is due no matter who the car company is.

no doubt that it is an impressive car...and the interiors are getting much better. We'll have to wait and see if pontaic waters anything down w/ the G8 GXP

I'm not sure what you're talking about. The Lumina SS doesn't exist anymore and they're not even remotely the same car.

Do you own a car that can handle as well as a Lumina SS?

The April 2 issue compares the C63, M3, and IS-F, and the Lexus did come in last.

Ok, I am just going to summarize it for you.

Lumina SS does exist and its sold in Middle East Asia(Gulf) and South Africa. Please check out this website for the confirmation.
http://www.gmarabia.com/content_data...tml?cntryCd=AE

We got the same left hand drive, 6.0 V8 , chassis, etc like the g8. The difference could be no availability of deactivation of cylinders , old 4 speed auto or 6 speed manual.

Another thing, there is a error on the data of the engine......it says 5.7 v8 but in the spec sheet it says 6.0 V8. It is the latter.

And no, I don't own a car that can handle as well as a Lumina SS aka G8. My accord stinks in handling and LS460 is a floater

I'm sorry, but I'm reading your post again and it seems that I was reading too late in the evening. You actually said the G8 DOES handle well. I could have sworn you wrote that it didn't handle well.
My bad

THANKYOU! I was arguing about this in an earlier G8 thread. I like to look at the automotive world from an unbiased perspective.
