Run flats
How many people ditched their OEM run flats for traditional tires? Mine came with continental contact ssr and I find them harsh and noisey with average at best performance. If you moved to traditional what did you do without a spare? That's my largest concern stopping me

My winter tires aren't runflats, recycled them from my now summer-only car. If anything my other car didn't come with a spare. So I just took that factory inflator kit and moved it to my F30, and bought a tire plug kit to go with it. I've done plug repairs with the tire still on the car before.

Bought a small air compressor and tire plug kit. If you want to buy the kit together I believe BMW sells one.
All the M cars come this way as they are not equipped with run flats. Michelin Pilot Super Sports seem to be a pretty popular choice of tire. I like those and the BF Goodrich Comp T/A tires. You can buy them in all season or summer only configurations.

I am not fond of my runflats but I am going to wear them out and then go for a good set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Seems like the way to go. I can't find myself throwing away a set of tires though. I don't have the coin. Lol.

Depending on what wheels you guys have, a good compromise is switching to an OEM set that is a smaller diameter (e.g. 19" to 18"). Makes a difference.
For my wife's car I am hesitant to go to non run flat for safety reasons. For my f80, I have the stock sealant kit plus a patch kit in the trunk. Hope I don't have to use either.... it is definitely a concern and I sweat a bit when I have to use the f80 for a long trip into areas with little cell reception. I would get a jack and spare tire if I did that often |

Having had experience with Bridgestone Potenza S001 and Pirelli P Zero RFT tires, I like Pirelli P Zero more: not as harsh, more comfortable ride, less noise. However I anticipate the tread life on Pirellis will be less than on Bridgestone tires. Even with Bridgestone Potenza S001 tires, I did not consider replacing them with non RFT tires. The convenience of RFT tires was an advantage.

Goodyear F1 asymmetric are rated highly, i too would stick with RFT for the convenience.

In over 30 years driving I've never actually had a 'quick' puncture! Had plenty of screws in tyres (RF & non RF) 9 times out of 10 (probably more) you'll lose a puff of air as the object goes in and then it will seal (but not completely) leaving a slow puncture. I've carried on using tyres (to save the £££) like this until they've worn out and just checking the pressure & re-inflating every week! Never actually been caught out and stranded with a flat! So I'm going non RF on my next BMW and hopefully will reap the ride & handling benefits! Just keeping my fingers crossed!

Swapped my RFTs when they were more than half-worn for Continental DW. I have the BMW M-Mobility kit (same thing they provide with M-Cars) and an AAA membership. I mounted these on APEX wheels (1/2" wider than stock front and rear). They're more compliant (better ride) than the RFTs, less expensive to replace, and provide great dry- and wet-road handling.

Sorry slower. Didn't mean to add so much stress to your day. I'm a new bmw owner and never had run flats. I did happen to search and didn't see what I was looking for. I got a lot of good answers, minus yours. Good community sans you thus far. Good luck sir

I've had a couple slow leaks due to screws/small nails, but I'm probably at 40% where no spare = no go. |
