M240 Engine tune

Need some advice from experts on here on tuning.

I looked at mike@x-ph.com comparative study published recently. And after some internet research, I am inclined on getting JB4 stage 1 or Active Autowerke B58 Tune.

QUestions -
1. One Autowerke differentiator is the RPM based boost control. What is that exactly and what are the benefits
2. These tunes cost around $500-700. Is it really worth it? With this tune, M240 will be making around 400hp but is the 60hp gain really noticeable.
3. Can i run them on stock car. Will there be any long term mechanical problems.
4. Any one has any first hand experience, please share.

I am bit new to tuning so please bear with some of the basic questions

thanks.

2) I'll be able to answer this shortly. Just put the CAI on today. It made the car burble a lot more (specially in comfort mode) and its noticeable with the windows up still. As far as power increase from just that, not noticeable. Hear the BOV when just revving. Driving you hear the whistle. JB4 will be going on (hopefully) tomorrow. Careless DP will (hopefully) be this weekend when I have some more time.

3)tune can be ran by itself on a stock car. If you don't plan on any other mods besides a tune, A8 might be the better choice because of simplicity. If going with a cat less or sport cat downpipe then JB4 is the only option to avoid the CEL.

1) the rpm based boost limited is good if you have traction problems. Other option would be getting better tires or even an LSD. I haven't had trouble putting power down in a straight line with xDrive so boost limiting seems pointless for xDrive models. JB4 also has this feature, only the boost is limited by gear instead of RPM. Difference being that it's easier to spin the tires in lower gears so best to have a flat boost limit there. RPM limiting can still have wheel spin if not setup properly.

With #1 I'm not an expert but this is my own understanding of it.

1- Burger Tuning JB4 is also RPM based. This kind of tune will offer a smoother power delivery. That being said, both tunes are very similar in this aspect

2- It is the mod you will enjoy the most. 60 HP is very noticeable
You will also hit that power a lot sooner

3- You can run them on stock cars

We have couple reviews on both on our website

I was in a similar place. I decided to put a tuner on my M240i. It was a nice noticeable gain and easy to install. I almost went with the A8 but I got a different one that's basically the same thing but it was based off a low special discount price they happen to have the day I was pulling out the credit card. I plan on testing it soon on the dyno to see what numbers it actually does.

I just put the JB4 on my car last night and the CAI this past Monday.
Intake makes the car burble more noticeably with the windows up and inside with some small whistling. JB4 made the whistle much more apparent and the power increase is phenomenal. Having a hard time staying off the pedal now because it's so much fun.

The car was fun before, but the JB4 makes it that much better imo.

Yes intake was super easy. Tune manages 2 sensors. Tune was easy to install, hardest part is getting under the dash. Recommend a trim removal tool to pop the front down and then it all pulls down and out (don't forget to unplug the light and speaker to remove the panel for more space.

Why under the dash ??? The JB4 isn't installed in the engine bay ???

The JB4 for the b58 comes with the OBDII cable. This allows you to change between the maps using the button on the end of the turn signal stick. It also allows the JB4 to clear the CEL when running catless downpipe and allows data logging if you ever need troubleshooting from burger tuning.

But yes, the JB4 mounts in the engine bay

The JB4 is easy to install imo as well. The Dinan tune only does one sensor and doesn't provide data logging. The JB4 has the added benefit (should you get the Bluetooth adapter for it) to open an app on your phone to change maps, data log, firmware update, temp gauge, and other gauges as well.

Basically if all you want is a tune and CAI, sure go dinan. If you want a catless downpipe, tuning support, updated tunes, multiple tuning maps in a single device for no additional costs, best option is the JB4.

Dinan has a name in BMW tuning, but they built that reputation when the original founder and CEO was still in charge there. I've heard mixed reviews about their stuff since he left. Burger tuning also has a name in BMW tuning. And if you want to argue any warranty status, having to fight between Dinan and BMW on who's going to be fixing anything is something you'd have to deal with and I've heard is tiresome.

I'm sure I missed some advantages of both but those are the major ones.

I love my Dinan Stage 3 and my Dinan Sport Tune as well for my n20. Don't forget the Dinan Sport tune can be adjusted with an app as well either android or iOS.

Unfortunately for those wanting a warranty...Dinan does not offer a warranty on the Dinan 'Sport' tunes. From Dinan site:

WARRANTY: DINANTRONICS Sport does not carry the factory matching warranty that Dinan is known for. DINANTRONICS Sport's warranty is a 1 year product only warranty that does not cover consequential damages or labor reimbursement.

For people that need to take the tune out for every service at BMW I feel like Dinan is the better choice as its easier to install and remove, JB4 is probably better overall

We sold most if not the entire first batch that Active Autowerke received, feedback has been amazing so far
