I would trust a review of a new SSD on ARS, but not a review about car tyres.

Totally agree that the article is outside their normal bailiwick. Though just as this forum has car enthusiasts I'm sure they have a few.

Ignoring the ARS reviewer's opinion what I found most interesting were the Michelin engineer quotes about Michelin's strategy, where they are and where they are going with the ultra-high-performance tires.

"We're getting to the point where the level of traction is so high, most people will never extract the full performance capability of the tire. So what they see are things like wear-life or even ride comfort."

Stickier tire with great dry handling and braking (hope so), better wet handling (awesome), better tread wear (I'll take it).

Essentially my take away is that the Pilot Sport 4S (PS4S) is a replacement for the Pilot Sport Cup 2 with wet handling and almost twice the tread wear.

If this is the case, wouldn't the PS4S be classified as an extreme performance tire and not ultra-high-performance?
This would be good news...

Pilot Sport 2 (PS2) not the Pilot Sport Cup 2 (PSC2). Very different tires.

What's frustrating is that no one will tell you how the OEM versions of PSS differ from the retail version. There is anecdotal evidence that the PSS on the C7 Corvettes, for example, is a much softer and stickier tire than BMW and other users of PSS have. The C7 PSS will crack if left outside under 40F for a while. Who knows if the PS4S is better, depending on what tweaks BMW has asked for.

reason for my comment...

The PS4S has borrowed a lot from the track-focused Pilot Sport Cup 2s...

and...

the PSS and P2S will continue to sell alongside PS4S for years to come...

If it doesn't replace the Pilot Sport Cup the next version may.
