Calling Irish 5 series owners

Hi, know there are a few of you on here....interested in hearing your experiences on upgrading from an F10 to a G30...am I alone or are the values dealers are quoting to trade up - despite the current BMW contribution level up to the end of March - really the pits? I hear that BMW Ireland flooded the market with cars at the end of last year to try and hold market position (didn't work, Audi did better) and as a result residual values have plummeted...

I traded my 520d in 2015 for a x5 and bought a 330e last year as well so not in the market for a g30 as of yet but was invited to the launch and spoke to the sales guys at it.
They told me they would be allowing very poor trade in values against the new car and did say they expected a few f10 owners to be disappointed with what the cars were worth. This coupled with the new higher basic list price of the 520d meant the price to change has gone up a lot. They basically blamed the sterling value and the rise of imports as well.
A friend of mine bought a pre reg 520dse last August with no mileage on it for 12k below list price from a BMW dealer. These type of deals which I hadn't heard of in Ireland before also instantly devalue the used cars.

I think the low trade ins is having some effect as Bmw are down 50% in sales In January compared to 2016 and not all of this can be attributed to g30 not being out yet.
Might be better to wait 6/12 months until the sheen has worn off the g30?

Andrew, seems short sighted of BMW... Some of the offers I have had are frankly derisory. I can get at least €10k more in value from independents. What's your experience with 330e? On the basis that the forthcoming 530e should in theory be priced similar to a 520d I took the three out for a spin. Not quite as powerful as my 530 but pretty useful none the less. I do a 40km each way run a couple of times a week so I imagine I could do that pretty efficiently; pottering around town should be almost entirely electric but I'd do longer runs a few times a month which would be petrol powered I guess. I sense it going to be the same over here as more users look at moving to the G30/31. UK market has had a boom time for BMW discounts, residuals are bound to suffer.

One dealer had the audacity to say what do I expect when his offer amounted to a €55k depreciation against list on a two year old car. FFS I'm not in super car territory with a five series.

You're in a 530d I think? About 80k new?so you're getting 25/30 k for your two year old?
That's mad if I'm right.
Re the 330e, It's a great car for me.
Good performance and economy.50 mpg average and almost as fast as 330d but close enough not to matter. Handles much better as engine much lighter so better balance.
The refinement is way ahead of a f31 330d I had before and the lci is a better quality too than before. Feels much more like a smaller 5.
I would like to try a 530e when they come out though as I think it might be a sweet spot in the range here in Ireland.
Unfortunately However I think the depreciation on BMW's is such that buying used will make much more sense or holding on to cars longer than previously.
If you wait you could sell yours privately. You will take a hit but still do better than a dealer. Then bring a nearly new g30 in from the uk. They will be plentiful in a year or less.

The list on mine was about 87k but I got it in from the UK six months old with 4000 miles on the clock for 65k. Best dealer quote so far is 38k (plus BMW contribution which expires in March). Have an offer of 43k against a 161 640 which I'm considering, otherwise I think I'll hold onto it for a while until the dust settles in the market, it's as bad as it was in 2008/9 as far as I can see. Anyhow, at those trade in levels one is only getting into a poverty spec car here whereas with a bit of patience I can get into the much better specced Uk cars.

I have driven a 640d gran coupe and while it's nice I wouldn't consider it amazing or vastly ahead of f10 530d.
Also you would want to be getting it very cheap as they depreciate as fast or faster than the 5. They can be bought in the uk very reasonably same as the 5.
They are same generation as f10 too so will be replaced soon enough and interior etc feels very 5 series.
At least the g30 is the next generation of cars.

The trade in given to us this last December for my wife X3 same year 2011 as my F10 was 8k more than what I am being offered for my f10, we have an X5 40e on order with delievery next month, even if the X5 cost more than g30, I expected more on the basis both cars cost the same back in 2011.
Plus I am still not feeling the same way about the G30 as I did with my previous e60 and current F10, hence looking into maybe grand coupe 6 or keep my F10 and buy a classic or summer car instead.
I also believe the offered amount for my f10 will not be far off it value in 3 years time, I moved here 10 years ago from London, the VRT was a shock hence switched to 4 pot engine from 6 cylinders, now the trad in value this bad it's simply burning cash, ok to do so for 911 or some special car but the 5 series no a chance.

Always struggled to understand why the 6 was priced so high compared to an A7 or CLS since it's based on the 5 .... But damn, it looks good!

Looks good but a bit of a boat.very long and wide.
Always overpriced and huge discounts were available in the uk from new I believe. They were heavily subsidised here too I think. I know a guy with one from new and he told me bmw Ireland were giving an additional 15k discount bonus to shift them when he bought in 2014.
With regards to the low trade in values for the f10, I think they're just a fact of life due to cheap imports and the fact they are so common now.they are not the prestigious car of old.
Buying nearly new will make more sense it seems.

Definitely better to hold off rather than succumb to the allure of getting into the brand new model as an early adopter...had a look st the January car sales stats versus January 2016 and BMW is down over 40%, and that's across all models not just the five series. Audi is back a little but Mercedes is up substantially, the E class is up by over 500% alone and that surely has a lot of conquest sales from BMW. Even tge Jaguar XF is holding its own, albeit from a low base. The 5 has become too common for its own good, and sometimes there's a quiet satisfaction in driving a high spec car which could be confused for a rebadged 518d ....until I floor the pedal!! More fundamentally, holding off on changing for a while might bring greater clarity on where the policy makers are going with diesel. The 530i is about six grand cheaper than the 530d with almost similar performance, albeit with only a four cylinder engine.
