iOS 10.2.1 screwed up my iPhone 6S

My iPhone 6S downloaded 10.2.1 automatically and it was installed overnight. Since then I can almost never get a mobile signal, and even when it shows one, it won't make or receive calls.

It is on the BT mobile network, and if I switch my SIM into another phone, I can make and receive calls normally.

It looks to me like iOS 10.2.1 has stopped the phone working with my network and there seems to be no way back to 10.2 any more. I have tried all kinds of reset, taking SIM out, resetting carrier settings, all with no success.

I noticed another person has reported this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7847609 , but anyone else here have this problem with 10.2.1?

Back up phone, rested phone, set up as new, restore back up. Usually sorts everything out.

Using iTunes on Mac or PC with phone connected (wired), backup your phone (data and settings), then restore your phone. The restore option in iTunes downloads a new copy of the iOS and reinstalls it from scratch. Usually works

Meant to add that when you use the Restore option in iTunes to reinstall the iOS, you get the option to restore data and settings from the backup you took as well, from memory
My understanding for what's it's worth is that when you apply incremental upgrades to the iOS via the Upgrade option under General in Settings, there is a risk overtime that the phone can get corrupted - and that's when a full wipe and reinstall is necessary
Good luck!

Having done the backup, reset and restore, I still have the same problem. The phone is about 14 months old, but I can see on forums that Apple's advice is first go through a series of checks, which I have done. If they don't work then either wait for another update and hope for the best, or buy a new phone! Cheers Apple!

It is ridiculous that you no longer seem to be able to go back to a previous version of the iOS firmware if an update screws up the phone.

When you did the "reset" did you go through the settings>general>reset > erase all content and settings routine?

Reset on the phone will NOT resolve this as it doesn't touch the iOS. Using the Restore option in iTunes on a mac or pc with the phone plugged into the mac/pic is the only way I know of to delete and reinstall the iOS which has been corrupted and is most likely to be the source of the problem
If the Restore doesn't work, you could try a chat with Apple support online (you'll need the phones serial number as part of the login which is on the original box) - they can be very good - or falling that, take it to an Apple Store

I did that reset routine thanks, but I think as TodmordenLad says this has left the corrupted iOS in place, so I am trying the plugged-in restore currently (which is forecast to take 2 hours thanks to my dreadful rural broadband!).

I have just spoken to Apple support to recommended this plugged-in restore too. They are going to call me back later to see if that has worked.

Unfortunately in addition to terrible broadband, we are also about 100 miles from an Apple store (!) so for now I'll go through the phone support and see how far I get.

Good to hear that they sometimes replace phones out of warranty.

Thanks again for all of the advice.

Good luck. Apple support is fantastic.
I had a cracked screen which I'd taken in to the store to get replaced. The job was being paid by holiday insurance. Apple just gave me a new phone so no need to claim at all!

Well the plugged-in restore didn't solve this unfortunately. Apple Support are calling back later this afternoon, so I'll reserve judgement on them until I see what they are prepared to do.

From what I have read on forums, Apple have been very unhelpful about similar problems, telling people with just out of warranty phones to buy a new one, but hopefully the stuff on forums disproportionately represents unhappy people. It would seem unreasonable if a software update causes the problem.

I will revert. Thanks

When you say 'plug in restore', have you literally done just that? If you immediately 'restore from backup' it will replace all he problem oh had.

You need to 'set up as new' when prompted and compete to the point the phone is working as a new phone.

Check for signal/calls at this point. If still bad, visit the store for a new phone.

If ok, then restore your last backup which will only put back the apps etc, not overwrite the IOS.

MarkG - I did just that, but on the advice of Apple Support, and being talked through it. I see your point though. Apple are calling me in a few minutes, so if I get no further with them, I'll give this a go, thanks.

Smee - I'm not sure you can do that any more. I believe they took away the ability to roll back the firmware recently - I read an article complaining about just this.

worth a read says about going from 10 to 9 but in theory the previous version 10.2.0 will still be there

users no longer have that escape route. In fact, even iPhone users who have yet to upgrade (usually the majority after only a week) will now find themselves in an uncomfortable position: leave your device unprotected against a major bug by staying on iOS 10.2 or upgrade knowing you risk breaking your Touch ID sensor and/or creating Bluetooth problems with no way of going back. Suddenly it’s lose-lose.

This is why Apple needs to learn now and again that it’s okay to compromise. It would be okay not to stop signing iOS 10.2 immediately so users could responsibly upgrade to iOS 10.2.1, fix the security patch, see if their device did or did not suffer problems and have the escape route of downgrading back to iOS 10.2 if they did. Instead, Apple continued with business as usual, leaving users on their own and any affected users hoping there will be a fix for their woes in iOS 10.3. Confidence here will be low given the company’s lack of fixes (or even acknowledgement of) the infamous 30% battery bug introduced by iOS 10.1.1 back in November.

This is where I got the idea that you can no longer go back.

I had a call back an hour later than expected - I think they forgot the time difference between the UK and Western Europe.

Since it's a 200 mile 4 hour round trip to the nearest Apple Store, they suggested taking it to a more local 'authorised' place I wasn't aware of. My 6S is a little under 15 months old, and I think Apple want confirmation that there is no physical damage to the phone before agreeing what to do.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like they may be aware of this problem, and are willing to take some responsibility, but without admitting liability.

I will update on Tuesday after visiting the authorised repairer.
