It's a lovely looking car and fantastic interior, those seats are sublime. It's a luxury cruiser, of course it's not an engaging car to drive. But hats off to them, it should sell by the bucketload and their design team are clearly on the ball.

That is a very nice looking vehicle. I'm glad that Volvo have gone back to going their own route with regard to design. Actually always quite liked the individualistic ideals of Volvo and Saab. Very Swedish.

Do we think it will be a 5 series beater?

Only my opinion, but not a chance. Only 4 cylinder diesels available in the UK and Ireland, even the top level D5 is only 4 pot and the handling just won't be a patch on the G30 or any BMW for that matter. That seems to be the consensus. And the interior of the G30 is now at the top of the pile.

But still, there will be many who will be tempted by the Volvo. 0% APR is available as well at the moment plus they piled in a load of options as standard. It's great to have so much choice. I could definitely see the pull of the Volvo to as an executive cruiser for those commuting on the motorway and busy roads. It will give an armchair ride to and from work.

Yep I think you're right. Quite strange that Volvo haven't offered a wider engine selection to the S90 when you look at the obvious competition; Merc, Aldi, BMW and there quite big range of choices. Certainly an attractive alternative if you're not fussed about a little bit more engine refinement. But I guess Volvo are tiny in comparison to the big German 3 who can offer a myriad of motors.

I think most of the observations here are correct, having driven the old 5 (not new) and the V90 I chose the V90 over the old 5, the interior on the V90 is ahead of the old 5 IMO.. The V and S90 come loaded with kit compared to the 5 series, Poliot Assist, speed camera recognition (the fix speed cameras show up in the sat Nav as well, why bmw can't do this!?) LED lights, electric seats etc etc..

Given there are no discounts, or hard to find on the 5 Touring they work out much much more expensive at the moment. That why I will have the V90 for 2 years and then check back in with the 5..

I think their green commitment to only 4 pots is a bit limiting but you assume that handling is the main criteria in this class of car. I drive an older Volvo and do so because in a straight line it is just so comfortable. For a large number of these that are motorway mile munchers that is very important....

Autocar did a full test, they said it was worthy but dull, placed it behind the XF/E class/F10 5er/A6 IIRC.

So I can't see a test against the new 5er going well for the Volvo, but if you like the look of it and at £200 a month you won't go wrong as no one makes bad cars these days.

Ah just seen the deposit on the deal maybe not so much then.

Test drove the estate version. Good looking car with great front seats. Engine and gearbox nondescript - no drivers car, I'm afraid

You can spec 21" wheels on the S90. Wonder if the ride is still decent.

Totally agree with you. For those commuting on motorways, this is a car that should head the list for those looking for an executive saloon, the seats look superb and the safety kit is a big assistance when doing those miles.

I don't think anyone including Volvo expect it to be a 5 series beater. To me, what it is and I think what it's designed to be is an alternative to the 5/A6/E class.

I bet the development cost of the whole '90 Volvo range is a fraction of what BMW have chucked at the 5 series.
