E90 328i Service Engine Soon Light?

Searched the archives to no avail. My daughter's E90 328i xDrive with 80k miles on the odometer has an amber Service Engine Soon light that comes on after the car has been driven a few miles. The engine then begins to miss, rumble and vibrate. If I turn the motor off, the fault will disappear and the engine will run normally for a few minutes before the light reappears. Any ideas?

At a minimum, get the Carly app and wifi gen2 adapter they sell and scan it for codes. Best option is to use INPA to scan for codes.

A misfire will certainly throw a code. Could be a plug or ignition coil issue. Your best bet would be getting the stuff the first poster suggested. If it is a plug or coil issue, then I'd just replace them all. Just to avoid this happening again for a while.

80K miles... original plugs and coils? Almost time to change them with recommended maintenance plan anyways.

SES light is an OBDII trouble code. Any auto parts store will have an OBDII code reader in stock for $50 or less (or check it for free).

I had similar symptoms for both a bad coil (stumbling, running shitty, SES) and Eccentric Shaft Sensor (hard starts, stalling out, rough idle)

This. There is a way to get the code value to display on the instrument cluster. I can't seem to remember the way to do it. I'm not sure if it works for everything, but it would display the codes for stuff like burned out bulbs and wheel sensor stuff.

Lol @ "searched to no avail."

It's throwing an error code, logic dictates you need to get it scanned as there is no way to peer into a crystal ball and identify the exact problem from an internet post.

This is what we did on a whim with my friend's N52. Changed the plugs, good to go.

We also found out the 14mm spark plug tools online weren't the right size....Very frustrating. 16mm is what you need for the N52, apparently!

You're very welcome. Sometimes people need reminders to actually utilize essential critical thinking skills once in a while. Besides, learning is a lifelong process

You are talking about finding the CC-ID code. CC-ID codes are codes in the body computer and are found by holding in the slide button on the blinker stalk. The codes only will appear if there is a warning triangle notification in the gauge cluster.

For those of you that diagnosed the issue as a coil, you were exactly right. It was the number 6 cylinder coil that was breaking down under load. I replaced all the coils with BMW coils and the spark plugs with NGKs.

My thinking on the plugs is that the NGK plugs are lower resistance than the Bosch plugs and theoretically should cause the coils to break down more slowly/last longer.

Thanks also to those that recommended that I buy a Carly WIFI Gen II; I'm finding it to be a very useful tool.

Yeah that thin walled 14mm 12pt is for boosted engines. Pretty sure I just used a normal 5/8" spark plug socket on mine.

Thanks. The current fleet leader, the $68 million G650, is an amazing jet - 103,600 lbs max gross takeoff weight, 51,000 foot service ceiling, 7,500 nautical mile range at Mach 0.85 and 6,400 nm at 90% the speed of sound. If you want to fly non-stop from Dallas to Hong Kong or to Cape Town, South Africa - it's in range. The jet's a joy to fly - I have a test flight in one later in the day and I'm looking forward to it.

Good things are happening in the regionals in terms of flow-thru, pay and equipment. Bryan Bedford showed me an Embraer 175 when Republic first added the jet to their fleet. It's fundamentally a mini-Airbus (as opposed to the CRJ which is a stretched Challenger 603). The Bombardier C Series looks like it should be a pretty good airplane as well. Best of luck!
