Why do dealers not have a clue

Went to go view some cars today

335d touring
X5 4.0d msport
X6 4.0d msport

I'll start with the touring I asked the salesman for the spec and he started reeling it off, he then went to tell me that this one was quite special because it was xdrive and asked if mine was!! I asked if it had comfort pack and he said "don't you mean comfort access" NO I mean comfort pack!!! Why don't these salesmen learn what they are selling
The car I looked at was the exact same spec as mine apart from mine has the sunroof and speed limit display it was up for £33,500 on a 16 with 9,000 miles, mine is 16 and 16,000 miles he came back with a price of 27k on mine! I laughed and said why is yours £6,500 more than mine for the sake of 7,000 miles. His response was that touring models were rare and fetched a premium and went on about that the car was 45k list price and so on. Mine was 46k list price but didn't pay anywhere near that. At that point I shouted the kids and wife and walked out m

Went to the next dealer there was no 335/340 touring there must be because of how rare they are
This one seemed to know a bit more about the range and was trying to get us into a x5/x6 they had them on offer, with msport pack, pro nav, some other bits
for £999 deposit 4yr PCP 10k/yr £599/mth
But wouldn't get into pricing mine till we had decided on a model. They asked what deal I had mine on and I told them my monthly and term and he looked at me and said no you can't have I asked why and he said BMW don't offer 5yr HP and couldn't have done me 2.9% Apr. By this time the wife could see my getting pissed off and before I had chance to say anything back she stepped in and told him where to go!

That's my 2 local dealers and now I remember why I travelled 140miles to pick my car up when I bought it new

What a straight set of idiots!!

Now that's funny

" His response was that touring models were rare and fetched a premium "

Dealers always give less for yours and make out their cars made of gold or is above case RARE

He might be over-egging it a bit, but I'm sure a touring would be worth a little premium wouldn't it?

Allowing for miles and an inevitable chunk of profit, the deal doesn't sound a million miles from being fair (or at least in line with expectations). Which isn't the same as saying it's worth taking...just the way things are when getting prices against such a new car (yours).

The touring is £1300 more at list mate, but mine had around 3 or 4 more options than the car I looked at
So surely 7k miles more on mine doesn't mean it's worth 6.5k less does it?

When I specced a brand new one the same on c2c it came out at 36k so that has only dropped 2.5k in their eyes over 9k miles

Dont rule out the M50D models too, I was looking for 3.0 and 4.0 deals when I got mine, was actually same/slightly less at the time.

Good luck with the search for space!

EDIT: I did a little leg work for you and HJ still have this offer on.....see the comparison, a 3.0D is not very different to the M50D. £30 a month after minimal deposit difference!

I think they make a large margin on this sort of deal, but people pay the prices.

As for knowledge, sad but true, notice my local seems to have had a high turnover of staff again. To many it's just a job but it's an interest to us.

Completely agree I walk in there fully expecting to know more than they do.

I'm not being big headed, I just do. As do a lot of people here.

Maybe we should approach BMW with some recommendations and ask them if we could setup a dealership.

I like catching them out. Asking what the car colour is (a very simple question). Had one the other week insisting this car was med blue.. I told him was carbon black and he was having none of it. So I checked the VIN and showed him

Obviously there are good knowledgeable people out there as well, just got to find them.

lol
The trouble is 98% of punters they get have even less of a clue so he sounds like he knows what he was is on about.

However if I ran a sales team I would make damn sure they all knew whatvthey were talking about or no more job for them, common sense really.

I have an ultra rare 340i touring 8k miles, gtechniq coated etc if you are interested. 50k

Which dealer had the X5 4.0d on that deal? I can see them at £9k deposit and £599 on BMW website for a 3.0d. The deal you were offered might be good enough for me to get one for the wife.

It was defiantly £999 deposit 4yr PCP and it was either £599 or £649 for the x6 and they said the same for a x5 come to think of it mate it was £499 deposit £599 for a X3 and the X6 deal was £999 £649
I've looked at that many prices and shit today my head is mashed

The dealer was sandal BMW Wakefield he did say they were deals the branch had put together themselves with deposit contributions, discounts and so on it was 4.9% Apr mate also

They had 730d msports on 0% also

My local dealer (coopers Teesside) completely inept from a sales point of view.

Never bought a car from them despite giving them every opportunity to bid for the business and I've had two new cars in the last 15 months and will change one or both in the next 15 months.

I think as others have said if you are on a forum like this you have to accept you are an enthusiast and will in almost all scenarios know more about their product than they do.

In some small way I like to think this is why BMW introduced their "genius" staff memeber program as they possibly got wind of the fact that far too many questions were being answered incorrectly by "sales" but to expect sales to be "technical" was a waste of time. you could argue product knowledge but I suspect the salesman know enough for 95% of customers just not the 5% of folks like us that spend our time in places like this

Almost £800 a month is too much for me. Plus, add my mileage to the deal and it'd be over £900.

In slight defence of the sales team at a dealers, they do sell every model in the range so their knowledge maybe stronger on some models than others. We know everything about the F3x range because most of us specced our cars from new. I wouldn't know the colours of the new 7 series though or what comes standard etc because it's not a model I'm interested in.

It still baffles me that people are "surprised" by the part ex values too!

I'm not surprised at part ex prices but it's taking the piss when they have the same year model cars on their forecourts for £1000s more then try to make stupid excuses up for it

Sadly not, last Pre-reg 335d went last week. We have 4 335d's coming in to stock to beat the 1st April VED tax, but things are firming up price wise.

There are a few good sales people around Chompers , but most give you the impression they were selling washing machines last week.

A good car salesman must be worth his/ her weight in gold...
