When will the new M5 be available?

I'm thoroughly confused by the information I'm seeing on line and on the forums here.

Is it really true that the new M5 won't be available until later 2017? Hard to believe that BMW would would leave so much time for potential customers to look at other options. I am considering looking at other brands if I cannot order a new M5 now...

Am I wrong on the timeline?

There is always a gap between generations of M models. In fact, it's not just BMW and M Division - the vast majority of high performance automobiles from in-house tuning divisions are subject to the same sort of hiatus when the base model is redesigned.

As for being able to drive the new M5 home in 2017, that is almost guaranteed not to be possible. Figure early 2018 as a best case, mid to late 2018 at worst.

If you compare with the F10 M5 it was introduced in September 2011 at the Frankfurt motor show. Went on sale in November 2011 with North American deliveries beginning in May / June 2012. European delivery started in September 2012.

According to what I've read the new F90 M5 will also be introduced at the Frankfurt motor show in September. Deliveries might start sooner but worse case certainly looks like summer 2018.

Thanks for the information.
A bit disappointing but good to know.
Perhaps I'll make the plunge on a CPO model for now.

While I agree this used to be the trend, Mercedes has completely pulled away from it. They basically release the 63 variants at the same time or within weeks sometimes. the C63 sedan came out just about the same time as the C300/400 models back in 2014. The new C63 coupe/cabriolet are the same, I went to the dealer about 2 weeks after they received their first C300 coupe and they had a C63 coupe as a demo already.

I think BMW waiting this long is a pure marketing scheme, but it doesn't make sense to me. I don't think there are many potential M5 buyers who will go and buy a 530/540 or even 550 while they wait for the M5 to come out. I certainly like how Benz does it, GIVE ME ALL THE OPTIONS AND LET ME DECIDE!

I tend to agree. The delay in availability is just making me consider other options, including Tesla.

I wouldn't go that far (Tesla far that is) haha

Just kidding, def cool cars but not for me. for $130k+ I want serious luxury finishes and the Tesla does NOT deliver that in my opinion.

You're mistaken.

The new W213 E63 sedan just debuted recently, approximately a year after the E Class sedan.

The W205 C63 sedan also trailed the C Class sedan release by months - nearly a year as well. The standard and AMG C205 C coupes came closer together, but so did the M4 as compared to the 4 Series. The 4 Series arrived in late 2013 while the M4 came in early 2014.

There may have been other instances - SUVs in particular - where Mercedes releases the proper AMG model much closer to the standard model's release. For example the G Class. But the X5 M, and in particular, the X6 M also come very soon after the Series model.

I agree that Mercedes tends to have a smaller gap than BMW, but it is not generally zero, and definitely isn't as short as you are remember for the current C. Perhaps availability on the market of the two was closer, but the product announcements were much further apart.

I think it is primarily two factors: M Division work has dependencies on completion of the work done on the series car and allocation of resources.

American deliveries for the F10 M5 didn't begin on the continent until mid-late August 2012. The F12 M6 Convertible went on sale in North America starting in June 2012 though.

The F90 M5 probably won't hit American shores until Summer or Fall of 2018.

Last I heard was a planned unveiling of the F90 M5 at the Frankfurt Autoshow this September.

I am going to be in the first group to do European delivery like you and Barry B. did all those years ago.

Canada got the F10 M5 in May 2012. Then again we had the 2012 model year.

I'm hoping they open up allocations for European deliveries as they did with the F10. I missed the day one ED group setup by RPiM5 by a few days, if they do this again with the F90 I'll definitely try to be there on day one.

So worth it to join the big group. One of the other couples lived just two miles away - we became very good friends with them. Still in touch with others via Facebook.
