iPhone SMS

I notice a number of android phones allow SMS messages to be read via idrive, but the iPhone doesn't. Do we think the functionality will ever return to the iPhone?

I'm due to upgrade and was going to wait for the next iPhone, but the galaxy s7 was supported, so I expect the s8 will also be.

I can read mine from the iDrive. Have to make sure the functionality is switched on under settings under the bluetooth sub menu.

Just use Siri ? "Read last text received" for example.

Can you activate Siri from the car, i.e. Not touching the phone?

Yes you can with a long press of the voice control button.

Depends on the year if manufacture. If the OP has a recent car and the relevant Bluetooth spec it'll work fine.

My 2012 F31 has, AFAIK, extended Bluetooth but I can't access Siri using the voice command button.

My car (late 2015) does not have EBT but with a long press of voice control, Siri kicks in.
