540d confirmed for USA

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
It was already confirmed long time ago by various sources but this seem to be more official.

BMW soon will launch a diesel version of the newest 5-series sedan in the U.S. called the 540d, a company spokesperson has confirmed. The new diesel-powered sedan will join diesel versions of the 3-series, X3, and X5, all of which are currently for sale after passing more stringent EPA emissions testing for the 2017 model year.

Although no official U.S. information is available yet, we assume the 540d will be powered by the 3.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-six found in the Europe-market 530d. In that application, it makes 262 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque; the 540d nomenclature suggests that our version of the car might make some extra power.

The previous-generation 5-series diesel, called the 535d in the States, offered both rear- and all-wheel drive, so that should be the case for the new car. We can probably expect an uptick over the 2016 535d’s 30-mpg EPA combined rating, given BMW’s claim that the Europe-market 530d is 13 percent more efficient than its predecessor. We drove a 530d earlier this year and were impressed with the engine’s effortless power and smooth demeanor.

Stay tuned for more official info on this new oil-burning 5-series. BMW isn’t ready to share specifics on the 540d, but we’d expect it to go on sale late this year, likely as a 2018 model.

The 640D in Europe has 308 HP and 465ft/lb torque. I'd imagine it would be the same engine.

In a few years when I'll need a daily I'll grab one second hand. Always wanted a diesel car. They make more sense for efficient driving.

Gasoline is relatively cheap in the US right now.

I've been around enough blocks to know that could change and I love the torque of the diesel (had one in X5 guise). But I'd be hard pressed today to take a Diesel over a silky smooth gas burning G30.

It's unlikely diesel will rule for much longer. People are attacking it for NO2 emissions etc so unless newer diesels fix that petrol will be the safer bet. In the USA you guys have ridiculously cheap fuel as well...

Jaguars are getting their diesel xf sportbrake to the US. That would make it the only diesel wagon in the size category of 5 series. But who knows what other auto manufacturers might bring. I hope BMW follows the diesel wagon since the 3 series wagon is getting too small for me.
Also I like the engine in the BMW. Jaguars are just getting the 2.0 diesel.

I hope they certify the 40d engine for the U.S. I think the extra grunt would make it a far more compelling engine, especially in the upcoming X7.

That's the old N57, the new one is called B57, so far it's only available in the G11 740d with 320 hp (metric hp) the N57 has 313 hp.

The last 535d sold in USA had the 30d engine my guess is that we can expect the same from the new one.

Nope , quad turbo new engine I think.

Or is that the new M550D too confused now with models lol. Great for USA diesel presence though

Wish we could get this engine in a 3/4 series in the US.
