Autocross Tires for 189s

I am looking for some auto-X/race tires for my 189 wheels. I don't want to buy a third set of wheels just for autocross.

I have seen a bunch of 225/40/18 for the front and but not anything for the rear (255/35/18). Some manufacturers make a 245/40/18 which would fit, but I'm not a tire expert so I don't know if that screws things up as far as staggering goes. Would this work, or is there a 255/35/18 out there that I could use?

I am currently using PS2s on 19" wheels, I'm wondering how much better race tires would be than them?

Thanks

Just get a set of Falken Azenis RT615. They are great as far as dry traction goes and you can get a set for cheap. ALOT of people use these as autocross tires.

The major downfall of the Azenis is that it starts to get greasy on the track in the middle of a session, but with autocross you dont have to worry about this since each run is like 1min max.

Good question

I've been wondering the same for both autocross and DE purposes. A DE is coming up at Barber Motorsports park on May 24-25 and I'd like to run some other than my stock Bridgestones. I couldn't find anything in 255/35/18 and have no clue whether it's ok to downsize to 245 or upsize to 265 which seems to be viable options with must tire manufacturers.

My idea was to get the same tire on all 4 corners so they could be rotated and perhaps get a bit more use out of them than the stock setup allows. But, I don't know what the optimum size would be. 225s all around? 245s??

Anybody out there do a lot of track days and/or autocrossing that has been thru this before and can share some insight??

There are tons of auto cross tires, but your right the sizes are limited. Just look at everything, Falken, Yokohama, Nitto, Toyo, and BFG.

does anyone know if 225 in front and 245 (instead of 255) in back will work? I was told yes by someone but I wouldn't mind hearing a second opinion.

You should be able to use 245s with no problem if you can find them in your size. I don't see Falken RT615s in 245/35/18. They are slightly smaller in diameter (about 7mm) so it's not a biggie.

You could also step up to 265s but it's a bit of a stretch on a 8.5" wheel (wheel a bit too narrow). You would probably feel more sidewall flex than if running them on a wider wheel but it's not impossible.

I like this calculator for figuring out which tires fit http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp

Without double checking I thought I saw some other mfrs did have 245s. I just wasn't sure if you could do this without screwing anything else up...

I'm not a tire expert so sorry if I seem stupid about it.

thanks!

I am going to try the Toyo Proxes R888, they make them in the OEM sizes (225/40, 255/38) so I can put them on my 189s with no worries. I can't find anything else that would work without changing sizes.
