Delayed delivery of petrol engenes?
Hi,
My dealer claims that there are problems / delays in delivering my 540i due to BMW not being able to supply enough non-diesel cars. Has anyone else heard about this? ...or is this just a bad excuse? I was promised a production week in July but now it might not even be in September, so I'm considering to cancel my order... (I placed the order in early May) Any insight would be very much appreciated. Last edited by G30-Maybe; 07-11-2017 at 07:58 PM.. |

I think it might be BS. I placed my order in Early June for a 2018 530. I had a production number the next day. My car has been completed and is at the Bremerhaven port. Maybe your dealer didn't have allocations. Check around. Good luck. Waiting sucks.

it may simply be that the dealer didnt have an early slot for you. they should have just said that though and been honest about it.
when i placed my order late may originally the build date would be october but I assume the simply swapped to for an existing build slot they already had and hence it became this week instead. |

Hmm... the reports here in sweden say huge delays on the 540i and only on 540i. Rumor says ordering one now will mean production mid 2018...
People ordering in early april are still waiting... |

Latest update promises the production week to be 35.
I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for no further delays... They claim that the delivery time would be no different on a 530i or M550i. Diesels are still no problem. |

sounds like rubbish to me. mine was built on the 12 of July. And when I look at VINS either side of mine, they were all 540is. (assume they build the similar cars with the same engine in batches?)
My car was built in Graz Austriaif that make any difference. |

how does that work? given the number of options and possibilities I would have thought they could build any car based upon what is requested.
mmm where is that rumour from? sounds odd to me but I dont work for BMW so no idea how this works internally |

I can confirm that allocation for 540i is 2 cars per month in Sweden.
The information is from my dealership in Sweden. Sweden has been for the last decades mainly a market for dieselpowered cars. The sudden shift in the demand from diesel to gasoline engines by the customers has led to this chaotic situation. The priority now is not small countrys like Denmark, Sweden and others in EU market. |

Allocation are country dependent. If you are in the US or Germany for instance, you shouldn't get any problem to get a 530 or 540i on time, but for some other countries in Europe, allocation for petrol engines is very low.
I ordered a 540i in France earlier in March, expected delivery date was around end of May/early June, but it has been delayed to September du to the higher than expected demand on petrol engines in France.. Basically, countries where most of the production are sold with diesel engine doesn't receive a lot of allocation for petrol, this is how it works (at least for BMW). And yes this is really BS because French government is now increasing taxes on diesel engines, so now people start again to buy petrol ones.. |

Supposedly from BMW uk. Cut and paste from swedish bmw forum. I assume this is for a 540i order.
"There is worldwide delay on all BMW petrol engines at the moment. For this order I would expect delivery in early 2018." If true (and it probably is), BMW seems to have made huge miscalculations on diesel vs petrol... |

Yes perhaps BMW have been taken off guard as regards the demand for petrol versus diesel in Europe, that ratio I expect in my opinion to change this year as more people become aware of the "war on diesels" |

Even though the government have said newer models who comply with Euro6 are exempt. I dont trust the government and could change their mind at any time. As they have done with recent policies. The demand will only rise once the autumn statement is out and diesel drivers will know how much extra they will have to pay.

Or hold on to it forever as far as diesel fuel is still reasonably priced?

I've seen some of the proposd rules about diesels being rather unfair based upon age rather than emissions. So sure I saw somewhere about diesels being more than 2 years old. Seem rather unfair given there will be EU6 diesels out there over 2 years old. My 2012 F10 530d had the option to be EU6 (I didn't go for it as it was £995) but just shows that there could be 5 year old cars out there that are EU6 compliant but potentilaly being unfairly targeted....
I'm not against eletric cars but for me the issue is charging. I have nowhere to charge the car in my block of flats. Many people live on terraced streets with cars parked on the road. Where are they going to charge? So it suits some people very well at present but its not for everybody yet. I'll put money on the UK Autumn budget starting to target diesle cars and thne wtahc how popular the 530e will become. It might start to eat into the 520D popularity significantly. |

Ok so I had an update about my order (placed in March) for my 540i : most of the allocations for petrol engines in Europe has been reallocated to North America. My car dealer called me today, and he told me he had a long discussion with BMW France, and finally managed to get a production date in 2 weeks, delivery expected in early October.
Unfortunately (for him) I decided to cancel my order last week already (they actually received the mail today as well), because my wife and me changed our plans. In fact, we initially wanted to buy a Mercedes E400 class coupe instead, but it seems Mercedes has shortage on their full digital dashboard, meaning that any order would not be delivered before January, which wasn't acceptable (and it wasn't "sure" anyway), as we also decided to sell our X5 ourselves (we sold it last Friday). As the Mercedes was no longer on sight, I put put a lot of effort to convince my wife to... buy again a Porsche 911 ! Of course it's no longer a family car, but we tested it to see if the whole family (4 members : 2yo baby and 17yo daughter) can fit in it.. and it works ! So this Saturday we pulled the trigger on a brand new C4S, estimated delivery mid December max. So yeah I'm gonna leave BMW for a while, no need to mention that I was quite disappointed by several month to wait wait for a car that I will finally never get.. |

strange decision by BMW given they had a firm order. surely doesnt matter to them where the car is going as long as it is sold so to prioritise your order elsewhere seems odd to me.

Or the dealership had a good long standing customer and they let that customer get in front of you.
