European Diesel vs American diesel

First off, I hate how they didnt come out with the 330-335d for the US F30/31.

Looking at BMW last night I noticed the European cars have more diesel options for the F series (318d, 320d, 325d, 330d, 335d) while US only has the 328d.

The closes to 328d is the 320d but even then has slightly higher hp & tq.

Why/how do European diesel have better specs? Are they not the same engines or does it come down to tuning? US needs to bring the 330-335d IMO.

It's all down to tuning and hardware on the intake side of things (i.e. turbo, intercooler, etc). There's only two engines, the 4-cylinder N47 and the 6-cylinder N57. Both of these have now been replaced with the B47 and B57, although, they may still be using the N57 in the F30.. The EU 320d with the N47 has the same specs as the US 328d. It's the EU 320d with the B47 that has slightly higher output, frankly, it's not enough to worry about.

Either way, the differences are really minor, I'm glad they didn't bring over any of the other N47 variants, it just clutters the used car market.

Not sure why they didn't bring over the 335d this generation.

Almost certainly a $ decision. They sold 10K 335d in three years, and ended up giving pretty substantial discounts (including the $2500 "eco" credit). Considering the warranty repairs, recalls, and the fact that those 10K cars cost them $500 each in certification costs, pretty sure they decided to cut their losses.

Pretty different when it comes to the X5d, where it's a pretty popular option.

The Euro 320d and the US 328d are mostly the same, but the US 328d got some cooling and other supporting parts from the Euro 325d (sorry) to beef it up and meet US specs; so it isn't an identical comparison.

The newer B47 engines are more powerful than the US 328d, but I expect BMW will be bringing a US 328 or 330d over with the next generation since they are bringing a diesel 5 series over.

As I understand it, the US 328d is the same N47 engine as a Euro 320d, but it has an upgraded cooling system from a euro 325d along with some beefier internals. trying to find a source for exactly what the differences are. Additionally, our emmissions system is very different to meet US spec.

Does anyone know if the turbo is different in the 320d vs the 328d N47 in the F30? I am looking to get a downpipe from Germany, and it seems that they only have the 320 as compatible

Yes, the USA turbos are different. 328d uses a Honewell/Garrett turbo. 320d uses a Mitsubishi made turbo.

Are the turbos the same size? When it comes to the downpipe, will a 320-compatible downpipe fit on a 328d?

Thanks
