m5 vs. 911?

I apologize if this is the wrong place to post this question, but I own a 3-series so this is the only place I know to post and I know that a lot of you people here know more, even about this topic, than others on different forums (so I hope it's not too irrelevant). My father is trying to decide between an M5 and a 911 (most likely a Carrera S). Now, I realize that these are two completely different cars that would presumabely fit two different lifestyles, but the truth is that my dad could do with either just as well and does not necessarily need the extra space of a 5-series (but the plus of the luxury must be taken into account). If anyone here has driven or owned either, could you say which one you would rather take if you were given the option? They would come out to around the same price. Obviously, we will be looking to test drive both and that would certainly go miles in coming to a decision, but any preliminary thoughts would be helpful and appreciated.

I guess part of what I'm asking is: is the 911 experience that special where it's enough to trump the pleasure of owning a v10-powered m5? Again, I understand the pecularity of the question, but thanks in advance...

Absolutly not the 911. And this is not coming from a bimmerboy etc etc. This is coming from an amzing 6 or an unrivaled 10. The m5 is definatly the better choice here. If you said to me 997 turbo then you changed it all but otherwise m5 100%. If your dad doesnt always liek speed he doesn tneed it but when he does he presses the button. In my honest opion its really a clear choice here.

depends on what your dad wants the car for. weekend car? daily driver? track? it depends, on most aspects the m5 will do away with the 911, but then again the experience of the porsche is a unique one.

i would do the porsche, even though the m5 is a beast.

m5 without the M setting (507hp) is a cow.

Get the 2009 Carrera S

Hey man, looks like your dads about to get a sick car, either way.

But the Porsche is definitely the way to go. Just make sure he waits for the 2009 models to come out, because Porsche is giving all their 911 models a significant refresh. This refresh will include a revised front fascia (deeper air intakes), revised rear bumper, revised taillights (slimmer, more futuristic looking), revised center console (less tiny buttons, bigger screen), and the two most important things: increase in power (30+ hp, 15+ tq = 385 hp, 310 tq), and the introduction of the dual clutch transmission.

BMWs are amazing but their is no substitute for Porsche especially a brand new Carrera S that can handle twice as well as the M5, give near equal amounts of luxury, and match, if not beat, the M5's acceleration numbers.

It's not as fast in P400 mode, but it certainly isn't slow.

Wow, that sounds really awesome. So it would be a 911 of the model year 2009, meaning it comes out towards the end of 2008? Or does it actually come out in 2009?

thanks

911!

The 997S is a fantastic car, and will return 25mpg-26 cruising..
It has just as much Luxury as the M5, but when you want to DANCE... hold on..
M5 is a gas guzzler..
911 is more fun BY far.. put the sport exhaust on and the aural experience can only be beat by a Ferrari!

Get the 911 turbo, if you send me a pm I will forward you the email from Porsche starting the negotiations at 9k off msrp. I would get a 1yr old porsche turbo cpoed if your looking to spend that kind of money. The car dealers are hurting and I think they have the mentality of the "real estate never goes down" people. I used to have the 4s 996 and felt my heart sink every time a 911 turbo would lurke. I will not make that mistake again. Currently I have the 335 as a daily driver, but im looking to put the new 997 tt in the garage in the next three years for under 60k. It will be 4-5 years old, under warranty(no matter what the cost) and less than 25k miles, although I have seen some with as low as 15-20k miles. They are all beautiful cars. When your dad is done with the porsche, maybe you can pick it up!

I'm a HUGE fan of the 911's but your dad doesn't sound like someone who would be driving the car very hard in which case the only reason to own either is more of a status than it is about the car... but don't get me wrong, that isn't such a bad thing. I just really don't see the point of buying either the 911 or M5 because they are built to be driven hard for speed. If he is seeking something luxurious, more so that the 911 (which in my case are perfect blends of sport/luxury) then maybe he should be looking at cars like the Lexus LS, Audi A8, Benz S- class or the obvious 7 series those are the most luxurious cars you'll find, although probably a waste of space for him.

The 6 series would actually be an more economical alternative to the M5 and maybe he'll like the luxury more than that in a 911. I guess what I'm saying is whats the point of having a V-10 if you aren't going to use? Its just a waste of gas that is already going up in price.

I guess coming from a guy who has wanted a Porsche since he was 2 1/2 I'd cast my vote in that direction but its just a bit annoying to see someone buy a 911 who doesn't want to push it to its fullest capabilities. Although... it'd be nice for you cuz he'll hopefully let you borrow it! But even if he gets a 911... tell him to skip the S model and use the money he saves for the extra gadgets that might make him a little happier, besides the 09's are already getting a power boost and are sickly fast to being with.

also... if he does want a sedan... why not consider the 550i (among other brands I listed in my above post) instead of the M5?

As much as I wanna say go with the 911, I just wouldn't be able to pass up the V10 engine.

I'd take the 911 if practicality isn't a concern. Can't really go wrong either way.

If an M5 and a 911 are simultaneously on your candidate list, the 911 is not the right car for you/him.

With that said, having driven both, I'd much rather have a Carrera S than a 911 turbo. AWD just seems to defeat the entire purpose in that car.

The only reason I would go for the M5, would be if I always roll around with 3-4 people. As far as driving in the weather, driving on a road trip, or just heading to work; the porsche is just as pratical as the M5. Sure it has a stiffer ride, and you might take it a bit slower over speed bumps, but it can be driving harder and for long durations just like the M5. Porsche's are rocks and are very reliable and like BMW's they are ment to be driven a lot, and hard.
