I've got a 335d with 140k on it. I do a lot of motorway miles in it and get 38-40mpg with a light foot. The car's been serviced regularly and drives wells still. I know a couple of people with lower mileage cars who've had them remapped and can achieve closer to 50 mpg.

Would getting it remapped put extra strain on the engine and end its life sooner, especially when being heavy footed. The two remap options I've seen local to me claim 330-350 hp and close to 600Nm of torque.

Will tuning the car shorten the engine life.... No, for the most part if you drive easy it will pretty much drive like normal.. if you keep your emissions stuff it will shorten the life of those

Will driving it like it's a race car... Yes

50 mpg? Probably not, but gaining some.. yes

50 miles per Imperial gallon (UK) is 41.63 miles per US gallon which is definitely attainable

Lifting power will always cause more wear and tear but if you delete & tune and not racecar it around 24/7 then it will likely extend the life of the car just make sure you stay on top of maint and preventative maint. It will definitely add mileage with granny footing it around all day removing all the restrictions / emissions.

50 uk mpg.... if I baby my 325d (n57) I can get 41-42.... so with a decent boost in power you could get up to speed with less throttle no let off sooner, also need less pedal to hold that speed....
some remap will place the power lower down and not as much as a full power remap to help this, I know Celtic tuning offer that (not sure if they're available near you though)

I like my remap so go for it! I have also done an EGR delete, water mist injection and some exhaust work and I am now struggling to get traction at lower speeds. Iam getting 32 mpg, this is mostly due to my short hilly commute to work only being 11 miles each way.

Attainable yes, but would require a light right foot and staying in the right lane on long road trips. 42mpg is pretty hard to consistently achieve on a daily commuter driving/tankful basis if you have less than a 30mile commute and you follow the flow of traffic.

i did 800 miles this week for work averaging 36 mpg with alot of 100 mph range cruising. If i get on the coast highway (40mph limit) i can hit 45-50 mpg easily.
Before deleted i used to struggle to stay at 30 mpg at 80mph now deleted i get 4-6+ above 30 mpg at 80 mph. I have not done a full to empty tank in a long time but i could get 700 miles on a tank pretty easily i would imagine.

Agree, I run a similar set-up as well with about a 450mile weekly commute with light traffic. Cruising speed for 95% of my ride is 75-80 per waze/gps, not speedo and hit the 34-36mpg mark per tank, depending on weather and # of short trips to mexico. Rain seems to make my mpg drop 2-3 mpg.

Thanks for all the replies. There's a place called avon tuning nearby who do egr delete, swirlflap delete and dpf delete, stage 1 & 2 remap and dyno for £799 which I am tempted by.

I don't boot it 95% of the time and always wait until the engine is up to temp when doing so.

To get 38-40 mpg I'm doing long distances everyday. 100+ miles each way and being quite gentle with the throttle. There's the occasional blip when moving from motorway to motorway up the slip roads. The car is also fully laden with 150 kilos of equipment in the boot.

I had the vacuum turbo hoses and fuel filter done recently and that increased the mpg by 2-3.
