Ad Blue Help
So I've swapped cars with my brother in law for the weekend and am in his X5 M50d.
It told me on the Idrive it needs ad blue and to contact BMW blah blah blah. (Didn't even know the car required it until the message popped up.) I've stopped at a service station and chucked in 5 litres but it seems like there is room for more. I'm driving back to London now from Edinburgh and the Idrive message has gone but was wondering if any of you guys know how much of this adblue crap the car can take. Also if the message comes back can I ignore it until I can stop at services or should I stop immediately to top up? (I've got another 5 litres just in case.) Thanks guys. |

Don't get stitched up buying cans of ad blue. Find a filling station that has it in bulk and fill up from the pump at around 40p/litre. This link should help to find one.
http://www.yara.co.uk/nox-reduction/...-I-buy-AdBlue/ You should be able to find distance to empty somewhere, don't have Adblue in my 335 but had it in my VW Passat, that took around 15l |

As teaston says. I hired a 7.5 tonner to move some stuff from Scotland (Perthshire) to Grantham and back (>600 mile trip inc other dropoffs). If I recall correctly, it only used a very small amount of AdBlue. So much so, when I pleaded ignorance about replenishing what I'd used, the girl at the hire desk just said it such a small amount used and not to bother. I suspect a car uses even less.

I bought a 1000 litres for some of our vans and it came in at around 20p per litre which is a fraction of the "garage forecourt", i know you would not buy 1000 litres unless you have a small fleet but I must say the small cans are very expensive.
I think the first ad blue users (VW LT van) were told to top up for free at their dealers, soon stopped that offer. Someone said it had a shelf life ??
