Cold air intake systems..your thoughts

I have read a lot about these on the web and elsewhere and opinion is balanced in favour of them but only if your car it tuned and especially has good extraction.
Reading the blurb when BMW introduced the MPPSK it was stated that the exhaust, apart from the sound helped with the power in terms of reducing back pressure.
The B58 appears to have reasonable ducting to the air box which seems to have a very adequate heat shield and the air box is robust which should help prevent heat soak
I have looked at the AFE momentum cold intake filter ...£650!
is this a waste of time and money ...would a drop in filter from K &n or similar be just as good in terms of getting a better throttle response and a few more HP of power... not really interested in any added sound from spooling of the turbo
My current car is the 440i with the MPPSK and other bits

If the 440i with MPPSK 'and other bits' isn't enough for you, then you bought the wrong car. Get rid, and buy an M4.

Panel filters do naff all toward performance.

I'm in the same boat; but I'm looking at intakes mainly for spooling sounds; dont give a damn about that pocketchange hp it gives; if any.

Likewise, been doing research, purely for educational purposes

On the face of it, AFE, BMS and other cone filters look pretty cheap. If you don't want extra noise, the BMS one retains the silencer on the intake, the others do not.

Personally, I've been eyeing up the Eventuri one, a lot of thought has gone into its design and it looks like it could be effective. Astronomical price though

The standard intake on BMWs is already very good, we don't recommend changing it. Our 440i performance upgrade makes 380hp with the standard airbox - there is no need to change it unless you want the look and/or sound of something different.

The leaf blower is positioned in a sneaky way biased to the product being sold. I am sure the intake is still decent but this is a shady demonstration and pathetic.

The MPPSK makes more than 380 with the standard airbox but presumably if it's doing this with a bigger exhaust, that would move any limitations from the exhaust to the airbox (knowing full wall that there was probably never an issue with the exhaust anyway)...

Yeah, they do state on the video that the standard airboxes don't suffer like that demonstration because of their piping and the enclosed nature of them, but an open cone filter won't be as good without the diverter (which makes sense).

I'm sure I saw a test somewhere that compared flow rates on standard vs cone type air filters and there was neglible difference

Personally I wouldn't change anything from standard as its already engineered to a high level

I still see people throwing away OEM air boxes to put a K&N style filter on which will draw hot air from the engine compartment, not filter the air as well as a paper filter and cause eventual problems for the MAF yet still be adamant it's a performance mod innit bruv.

I have left things for several hours and whilst there may be other responses I think it is fair to say iam very much minded to leave the cold air option to one side and stick with the stock set up;that is unless in the future some convincing data comes up to show there are real benefits from this system
To those who have responded many thanks.
Just a point of interest directed to daftasabrush ..... really good figures for the HP:is that just with the MMPSK upgrade and, would you share with us what torque figures you got. To date I have avoided getting the car dynoed for sake of being embarrassed that it would not give what BMW say on the box ie 355hp 369lb/ft
Again thanks to you all

Many thanks
Had heard that BMW had under quoted their figures for the stock b58 engine and with the MPPSK had seem one set on the American forum showing 368hp
Will not harass you further on the subject, save only to say very impressive !
