New car suggestions
Hey guys
I am in the market for a new car I do about 25k miles a year, so need a good diesel What are people's thoughts on the 335d? Some great deals to be had on diesels currently, I got offered 26% off list without much trying? I currently have an e90 330d, which is a great motorway cruiser, handles well etc? I've heard that the suspension on the 335d is not the greatest? Also considering the impending diesel tax is now really the right time to be buying a diesel There are some cracking offers on Mercedes E Class (E350) as well, test drove one, found the car to be very comfortable, standard car comes with a lot of toys? But it feels like a barge and the drive is very floaty, however it is a great car to be in on the motorway Any thoughts guys on which car I should buy? Are there any other options? I need good fuel economy and a bit of poke Cheers

E class and 3 series you can't really compare against each other, the E class is the equivalent of the 5 series.
It all depends what you really want out of a car though, and what your needs really are. As an example, a friend of mine who does about 60k miles a year swapped his car about a year ago, and went from a 330d to a 520d. He says it's the best decision he's ever made, because the car is so much quieter and more comfortable. He can drive 300 miles, and get out at the other end ready to go. In the 3 series, there was more road noise, less space (he's a big bloke), less legroom, and just a lot less comfort overall. |

Similar situation to yourself and I have coming on the 02.09.17 a 335xd - about £26% off is right to be fair.
A lot of love for the 340I too on this board, and if they had the engine available as a build slot there is a very good chance I would be looking at a large fuel bill looming. It depends how good your man maths is to justify what you really want I guess. I would have considered the deal cheap if I hadn't added 8ks worth of optional extras, on that front a lot of people are also considering the 4 series as it comes better equipped as standard, although is yet to have the LCI2 treatment the F30 & F31 has just been through. Do you need to load lug, family, dogs, drugs running?

If you currently have an E92 335i, you should notice a decent uplift in economy between that and a new 340/440i.
On the diseasel front and on the Mercedes front, I noticed DrivetheDeal have a couple of new CLS350d shooting brakes in Premium Plus spec discounted from £57k to £39k. That's a discount of over £30k and they are pretty attractive cars. https://www.drivethedeal.com/SpecialOffers.aspx

Assuming you really need a diesel then the new 530d is a lovely place to be. If you want a smaller sized car perhaps look at a 435d GC rather than a 335d - lots more standard spec and imo a nicer looking car but if we all like the same thing it'd be boring

The x35d is a great engine and whether you want a 3/4/4gc or even an f10 535d it will be a really good car.
Merc and Audi have nothing to compare at the size of the 3/4. |

If you constantly drive for more than 90 minutes at a time, I would start looking at the range up from the 3 series - i.e. 5 series/a6/e class. I had an Audi A7 and it was the best motorway cruiser I have had and delivered very good efficiency. I drove it from Scotland to Nuneaton and I could have literally drove straight back. The Audi A6 has the same comfort seats.
I love my F31 330d but when I do a couple of hours driving straight, I feel like my back needs a rest (I'm younger than 30 btw and not overweight). Performance wise, the 335d is the way to go but if you don't like the suspension of the X Drive, consider a 330d. I could definitely feel a difference in cornering ability between RWD and XDrive and I feel so much more confident in my 330d SD.

Very comfortable motorway cruiser as well. Although, don't rule out a 40i, my average mpg is about 6mpg lower than my old biturbo for the same driving profile. I also do 25,000 miles a year. It was a no brainer for me, I got 13p a mile from work for the 3 litre diesel, but now get 23p for the 3.0 petrol. As my miles are paid from home, I'm better off. |
