Icon Adaptive LED with High Beam Assist - How Cool?!!

Finally had a chance to give this a try last night and to be honest, thought it was bloody awesome!!
Our M135i had Adaptive Xenons with HBA, but they just dipped themselves and then back to main beam - these things on our F31 are some kind of witchcraft!!

Thought maybe I was being a bit sad being impressed by some car lights!

Again I'm a massive fan. I'd previously had adaptive xenons on my F31 which at the time were fantastic. While some disagree, the Icon Adaptive LEDs are somewhat better in my view.

The novelty soon where's off, and after half a dozen flashes, you won't bother using it.

High Beam Assist on Xenon headlights never really worked effectively. I was frequently flashed by other vehicles, so soon stopped using it.

On the Icon Adaptive LEDS, it works really well.
Massive improvement.
Not been flashed at yet.

(well I was once, but that was because I put them on full beam and forgot to press the little button to enable assist)

Tried it a couple of times and I agree you do still get flashed as it seems its mostly a split second too late to dip.

Garage List
I think the adaptive Xenons gave better light but I did get flashed. LED's don't seem to have the depth of field but I've never been flashed with them.

What is the difference between the HBA with Adaptive LED's vs HBA with non-adaptive LED's?

I have high beam assist on my car which has LED headlights, but it does not have the adaptives!

HBA switches main beam on/off when a oncoming car is detected. Adaptive directs the beam out of the way of on coming cars - the video below explains better...

They are amazing, but I can't even remember the last time I drove in the dark so weren't worth the £700 outlay to me.

As others have said, the Xenons with that feature light the road better, but that's down to Xenon v LED.

I'd still choose again, but most times UK roads aren't clear enough (even when going from Sheffield to Dover at 11pm) and it dances around just a tad too much - perhaps the algorithm is overly sensitive, given Xenons got us flashed?

Having said I'd definitely pick again - strange how other German marques seem to get better reviews of this type of light though.

I disagree with the comment about Xenons lighting the road better, they light it differently. The Leds in my experience light the edge of the road much better than Xenons (very important with the state of the roads as they are). As for main beam the light in my view is very similar.

As for the two main competitors (Audi and Mercedes) their led headlights use individually dimmable leds to create the variable light distribution. The BMW system is fairly archaic in that it uses motors that physically move the light about. Taken to extremes the Icon Adaptives use 8 leds. The Mercedes intelligent light system uses about 200 (although you can't really see the individual leds in the light cluster) Audi is between the two.

I too had the adaptive Xenons in my F31 and thought they were great. Only flashed a. Lille of times in 3 years and as it is dark from 4pm through the winter I used this feature quite a bit.

Ordered the adaptive LEDs with my F36 and got to use them on Friday. Initial impression is that the light is very good, but don’t think the distance on full beam is as good (as mentioned above). The side illumination and adaptive bit are still very good.

Not experienced Mercedes or Audi with this feature so nothing to compare with there.

I've gone from xenons to LED's on my F30's and I think it's because the LED's light up the near ground and sides so much better than xenons that it creates the illusion of the distance not being as good.

Possibly. Bad time of year to change cars as it’s been 4-5 months since I was using headlights frequently!

I changed cars in early February so could compare within a few days.
