K&N drop in air filter - is it worth it?

As above, is it worth replacing the drop in air filter with a K&N version? Ideally id like to hear from someone who has used it before to see if it made any difference at all. i know gains would be very minor, but main concern is it doesnt loose power. Did you find any increase in noise? Any increase is throttle responce? etc.

Thinking of getting one for the 330D.

Thanks
Sam

Honestly the only reason to get one is if you intend on keeping the car long enough that servicing the K&N becomes cheaper than replacing a regular paper filter.

Much appreciated. The car is my new mile muncher for work and back doing 100 miles per day so from that point it would be worth it.

No idea what a charcoal delete is.

You also need to be careful it's oiled the exact right amount to filter correctly but not ruin your air sensor. I'd honestly not bother.

as above..use minimal oil if you go k and n or piper cross etc,ive just sold my focus st stage 2..it had a piper cross filter..easy to wash then mist up with oil.only on one side..ie the side not facing the maf sensor,,these can easily become caked in oil and give mis reading and send car into limp mode and a lot of other running problems

I have one. I like the sound it makes at around 3-4 k , also the car is more responsive under acceleration, it feels faster or torquie , maybe it has to do with it being more responsive, still for less than a 100 bucks , well worth it

I had it on my civic too and the I had the same feeling , car feel more responsive (like more torque) , sound was great.

Spoke to a few friends before putting one on in my civic and they had the same feeling.

+1. Sound advice. I've used a full blown GruppeM on an S54 and an other K&N on the wife's 2.8 and while on a petrol engine it will give you a better induction noise, it can piss off your ECU, MAF etc.

On a diesel keeping the engine clean is key and the car's management is so complex, frankly I would not bother. These cars are powerful enough.

Keeping your car in top notch condition will give you back the power and throttle respnse you may have lost. And its a good investment ,)

How did you find the GruppeM induction kit? been considering getting that for my 645 as there arent many mods for this car unless you go supercharger but at £7.5k i think il give that a miss

yes and I cut out a section at the front/side of the airbox so some air gets in from the front of the car rather than the top where its hotter.

Just as an aside, I noticed my replacement Bosch airfilter doesn't have as many pleats as a BMW branded one.... less filter area I'd guess!

2nd hand from a fellow z4m user in Scotland. £650 if i recall correctly, his wife thought it wax to noisy. Its just som fancy CF cap thing with a dôme K&N filtre (which is top notch). Not sure it dix anything powerwise (placebo of a more insistant and urgent top end rpm) but TBH I bought it to balance out thé noise from the AC Schnitzer backboxes with induction noise. It sounded fabulous. Well worth it on an NA petrol car.

IMHO its borderline criminal to shove a supercharger to an N/A straight 6. Although on some old school (ie:not high reving) V8's I love it...

Thanks. So not really worth the money in that case. The K&N version may be cheaper for the 6 series. Was ideally after a closed box cold air intake for the 6 as under bonnet temps get very high when on track. Cant seem to find a closed box solution though.

Too heavy for track use. Far cheaper to use a rental specifically designer for track. IMO.

Im not a regular track visitor, but when it taks my fancy i use the 6. Im not using it to be competitive, rather just to have some fun with my weekend car. I know its heavy, really heavy lol, but it doesnt bother me

Anything but closed airbox is literally a waste of time, all your doing is raising your intake temperatures.

I put a K&N panel filter in my 2.2VTEC Honda Prelude years ago - drilled holes in the underneath of the standard air box as I didn't want boy racer look with a CAI. The theory was that it would still get supplied with cold air from the main inlet but could extra (coolish) air from additional holes. This was an approx. 200hp normal aspiration, 8.3k rpms limiter engine so easy breathing was quite important. TBH - did not notice any difference at all in noise, responsiveness, power. So on a diesel I guess it would be a total waste of time unless it was massively tuned!
