DME replacement/repair

Hey guys,

Does anyone here have any experience with a DME replacement/repair? I fried my ground trace in the DME (JB4 ground contacted 12v battery rail). I'm currently using the TMAP ground bypass and car is running fine, but was looking for a more legit fix. Does anybody know a place that does DME repairs?

Also, if I did get a remanufactured DME, does anyone know the process for programming it to work with my car?

Thanks in advance

If you wanna repair it, check this post: http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31469

If you get a new one, it needs to be coded to your car. If you don't wanna do it yourself, ask shawnsheridan

or find a company like this one: http://www.ecudoctors.com/bmw-ecu-dm...d-rebuilt.html

How does one even figure that out what went on an ECU board this complex? Really amazing stuff to be able to fix it.

IIRC, the guy who found that lives in China and took it to a shop that specializes in repairing flood damaged car electronics.

I think early on burger had it happen on their cars and they posted the t map ground bypass fix, it's how I knew about it.

Not sure how they knew about it or if they figured it out.

Is this common on EWG cars too? Any way to prevent it? Is it just bad luck or some kind of design flaw?

It can happen on any car. Just disconnect the battery before plugging/unplugging electrical stuff and you'll never have this problem. It only comes up if the USB hits the 12v and shorts, or sometimes just unplugging/plugging in the TMAP sensor will cause a voltage spike that fries the trace (which is what I did). Lesson learned on my part, ever since then, I carry a 10mm in the car just for the battery.

My issue actually didn't come up while I was trying to connect/disconnect anything... JB4 had been on the car for 7 months and no issues at all and then all of a sudden the ground wire happened to get in contact with the 12v battery rail :/ I'm going to make sure to route that wire far away from the battery rail next time

Less common on EWG cars, has no hot or ground I believe like the PWG cars do. But I have heard of it happening on EWG as well but just hear say never saw anything myself.

Luck of the draw..and end user. The early JB4 cases were to blame alot with the exposed pin terminals and bumping into the battery power post. Regardless its scary shit that this can happen and fry your car.
