Wheel alignment

Just got a couple of front tyres fitted by a local (chain) fast-fit tyre place and the guy says when I go to pick it up that the wheel alignment is out on all 4 wheels.

I say I'm surprised as less than a year ago it had a KDS alignment at BMW, however he was adamant the rears were loads out and the fronts weren't much better.

He said one of the parameters at the front that was out was camber and I said I didn't think camber could be adjusted, at least not on non-M cars. He went away to check with someone and returned re-asserting that camber definitely could be adjusted at the front.

The car tracks true and although I wouldn't be surprised if the toe-in needed adjustment a bit given how many potholes there are around it really didn't ring true.

I politely declined his offer to set it all up which would have been in the region of £130.

Not sure what I should do - apparently WIM at Chesham are supposed to be good and they aren't too far away

ANy recommendations as to what I should do - part of me thinks that the car just wouldn't drive properly if it really was that much out.

My instinct is that you're right to be sceptical in relation to their claims.

As to what you should do to obtain comfort on the matter, I'm not so sure...

You can easily see if there is a problem by looking at your tyre wear. If the wear is even across the tyre on all 4 wheels you don't have a problem.

How were the tyres wearing before they were changed?

That.

Even steady wear, there's nothing to worry about.

Tyres wearing rapidly on the inside/outer edges, or one tyre in particular wearing rapidly, then you've got something that needs attention.

I would be suspicious of this chaps motives, but he is correct that camber can be adjusted.

You also won't ever get the fronts aligned, if the backs are out of whack.

Local Hunter alignment near to me is £60, as a guide.

How is the camber adjusted on the front ?

Where is your local Hunter equipped place ? Would be nice to go somewhere recommended.

I don't know how it is adjusted, but it was a measurement that changed on my last print out.

I am in East London and used a small tyre shop I found on alignmycar.co.uk

It's on Barking Road in E13, can dig out the name of the place if needed

Garage List
I had my wheels aligned using a Hunters Alignment system in Dudley (Addison Tyre Centre) today which cost me £90. My NSF was wearing unevenly low on the outside edge and my OSR was wearing unevenly low on the inside edge.

I'm just about to replace all 4 tyres so it was definitely worth getting this done now.
