Coding question

Hi, bit green to this stuff but if I bought, say, Bimmercode or Carly and coded a few things on my 2016 320d F31, would the dealer be able to tell and would it void my warranty if any work was required? If I reset things before taking the car in, could they still tell?

Thanks

Ive got Bimmercode, works very well. I am 99% sure it doesnt invalidate the warranty as you are just activating and deactivating things on the car.

If you fucked up the coding and 'bricked' the ECU, then yes, it could invalidate the warranty.

But for basic coding, highly unlikely.

They are not that fussed to be honest. You are unlikely to brick any of the ECU's as you are not flashing them but just adjusting settings in there. Unless you disconnect half way through changing things but even then you can inject a new CAFD file to replace the corrupt one

The only time you'll have problems is if you change the FA (Vehicle order) list and actually write that back to the car. This is the only thing BMW will pick up on, if your order does not match what they have on file. None of the apps like Carly or Bimmercode mess with the FA. Only Esys can do that.

Cheers Stu, understood.

I've no plan to use ESYS or any of the expert options. I'd just like to tweak a couple of basic things, like many folk I suppose. I gather BimmerCode has a demo mode before you pay. I wonder, does that give you a clear idea of which options are available (and adjustable) *on your particular vehicle*, or does it demo ALL available functions to tempt you into buying it...?

+1, it'll be interesting to see how the app works as I am thinking of making some changes to my car too. Will this app work on idrive 5 too?

Esys is a bit daunting at first but once you have followed some of the tutorials, YouTube videos and cheat sheets, you will soon get the idea. There's a multitude of built-in coding options within Esys that can be easily applied. It's free and although slightly more complex, it's also much more versatile than any of the payed third party apps.

I've always used eSys but just recently bought BimmerCode which is far more straightforward.

You can connect to the car and scan to see which ECUs it picks up before having to but so just give it a go.

I bought this dongle:

Hi Mark,

I am interested in getting Bimmercode to code a few things on my new car when it arrives, I paid a local garage to code my 320d as I was worried about cocking it up. can Bimmercode change things like, mirrors fold when locking?

Yes it can, and many other things since it has the 'expert mode' - essentially the same as eSys

Thanks everyone for their interest and replies to my original question. I've ordered the dongle and will give it a go with BimmerCode. I may gravitate to Esys at some point, I may not :-)

Exactly this. It looks like it has plenty of options but to do basic coding you actually need just a few of them.

I used some manual from the internet and it took me less than 30 minutes to do some coding.
