Does it do fuel left or anything else really useful ?

HUD is well worth having .

Go to settings, Heads up display and it gives a list that you can check/uncheck.

In some ways it is disappointing and in others not.

It SHOULD show gear and tacho in Sport mode and doesn't which is very irritating.

But using it for nav directions which is really good. Also shows:

- telephone contacts
- music choice / track skipping
- cruise control / limit
- speed limit (optional extra)

So for me it's missing then most important things which I'm not happy about. Prefer the Mercedes HUD.

It depends what other options you have fitted too - ACC gives you cruise info, distances and collision warnings, Speed Limit option gives you speed signs plus others e.g No overtaking. You also get ice, low fuel warnings etc..

I love the HUD, it's my favourite extra and would not purchase a nother BMW without it.

No. However not sure why you'd need it. The repeaters in the wing mirrors are pretty bright and hard to miss.

It's one of those options I didn't fully appreciate until I lived with it. We now have it on both of our cars - the other one being a Mini which shares BMW's system (although that has a pop-up screen). The most useful aspect for me is the sat nav directions, meaning I don't have to leave the voice on, except in busy unfamiliar urban areas.

Very odd that BMW offer it on the Mini, but not the current 1 Series.

Now I've had it I'll always spec it on new cars. It's very useful for getting the info you need and without taking your eyes off the road. Changing the speed to KPH and getting that on the HUD when driving abroad is also good, although probably not needed as much with the new digital dashes.

It shows gears and rev range on M3/4, so it's probably codable...

Personally I don't really use it - and left it off my soon to be S5 in favour of the pano roof!

To be fair, it's great for the Sat Nav directions, however, in my own situation (same place of work for the last 12 years) I very rarely use the nav and when I do the split screen display provides excellent detail with the small right hand side being a zoomed in version allowing you to see clearly junctions and turns.

It is useful I find for scrolling through telephone contacts, radio stations and media tracks - but as the last two I rarely change on a journey it's only really the telephone that I use frequently - and even then if I didn't forget every time I could use Siri through the steering wheel anyway.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that if you're sticking to a budget (as I was with my S5) then I'd personally put it below other things (pano roof, adaptive suspension etc) but if you've got the spare cash why not - and it's probably only £20-£30 pcm on a PCP anyway.

Yeah I've checked and I would need the F80 dash too.

Yep, HUD is a must have for me, especially as I wear varifocals which mean having to turn my head (albeit slightly) to see the iDrive.

As I've said before though, I wouldn't waste £220 on SLD again - mine is wrong more than it's right and frequently caused me to doubt the speed limit unnecessarily.
