Anyone that can explain the differences?

One is static, one adapts or changes based on road conditions or via the driver changing it

I like the adaptive and would get it on the M40i

Driven many different f30s with and without MAS.

It's a must in my opinion, the ride quality is significantly more composed. Additionally, it gives you the ability to switch between comfort and sport, and the difference is very noticeable.

I assume the system and drive characteristics would be similar in comparison.

I would at the very least drive both.... again on the f30 chassis, it makes a significant difference and greatly improves my enjoyment of the car.

That would be covered by the dynamic damper control though right? and the M adaptive is in addition to the dynamic damper control

DDC is not available on the M40i. Adaptive M Sport is offered instead.

Ok, I guess I misspoke after looking through this a bit.

With standard X3, you can opt for Dynamic Damper Control as a part of the ZDH dynamic handling package or a $1000 add-on to the M sport package.

Adaptive M suspension can be added to M40i, $700 option 2VF. It sounds like basically the same thing. I think I was confused because I had read somewhere someone was saying the damper control was better than the adaptive M, which doesn't make sense that it would be an option for the standard but not available for the M40i.

"The Adaptive M suspension's electronically controlled shock absorbers constantly adjust to road conditions as well as driving style within milliseconds, guaranteeing optimal road contact in every situation, the best possible traction and even more agile handling"

"The Dynamic Damping
Control feature, in turn, adapts shock-absorber settings to
road conditions – and your mood – at any given moment, for
the optimal level of firmness."
