Love the colors... hate the wheels. (I feel like if I just bitch consistently on every thread about this car maybe BMW will obey me and offer a version in all silver)

Not sure why so many people dislike the wheels. Indeed these aren't the typical M wheels from recent models, but I think they perfectly suit this particular vehicle. Unlike an M4 or an M2 whose whole design clearly tries to express uncompromised sportiness, the M5 is a pretty different animal which, though belonging to the same breed, stretches quite far towards the luxury end of the spectrum as well. It is only logical that the vehicle's design follows this more balanced philosophy by expressing a little less athleticism and a little more refinement, which in the wheel department has been done by replacing the typically sporty 5 spoke wheel design by a slightly more luxury evoking wheel design which typically has more spokes.
Other than the superior number of spokes, these wheels totally comply with the usual M wheel design fundamentals (double spokes, bi-color, dark center), and though possibly appearing a little flat and shy from a vehicle profile angle (probably because the spokes smoothly fuse into the outer rim instead of marking a clear indentation), they reveal some nice center depth when viewed from a three quarter angle. I wouldn't be surprised if future M models following the same philosophy (X5M, X6M...) get similar 'a little more multi-spoke' wheels. Last edited by advantage20; 10-05-2017 at 07:08 AM.. |

Sure it's just a rule of thumb, not a general principle. There are indeed sporty cars with multi-spoke wheels (Alpina, AMG, motorsports racing...) like there are luxury cars with 5 spoke wheels (Bentley...), but generally speaking there seems to be a tendency over recent years, in the industry and even more so at BMW, to typically represent the more sporty/radical versions with less spokes (typically 5) and the more luxurious versions with an array of multiple fine spokes (typically 10 or 15).
The M5 is atypical with 7 and I think these wheels perfectly suit the model. The M8 test prototypes currently wear the same wheels, but I wouldn't be surprised if BMW adorns it with a specific wheel design to make it more special like previously the M6 GC |
