Can you run a test with INPA on the DMTL pump?
I thought I read that you can tell INPA to test the pump. I just want to make sure its bad before I replace it. Also, how is this a 3 hour job?

It's in the engine control section (such as msv70), and depending on the version may be under diagnostic testing or something about End of Line test if I recall correctly. Just poke around in the engine computer and eventually you'll find a reference to DMTL (sorry I can't be more descriptive right now!)
Changing the dmtl pump is a 30 minute job (on rwd 328i), longer if the connector gets stuck to the dmtl pump. I replaced the pump and the sealing grommet (BMW Sealing Grommet - Genuine BMW 16131183912) You'll need an 8mm wrench, 10mm wrench, and a T20. Did it last Saturday. It can be done in place, under the car without jack/stands/ramps. Also you do not need to remove the charcoal canister and its two other difficult connectors, just lower it and remove the dmtl pump. I believe it was around $65 for both parts from FCP. I opted the OEM pump, which was made by Bosch.

Anyone know if the charcoal canister filter is worth replacing?

So I ran the test but I am not sure what I am looking at. I have 3 different bars with a black bar in those bars. Then 3 different numbers. All of them were almost the same. It was like 35, 35 and 34.

You'll have to post a screenshot, maybe someone can help interpret. I recall seeing something about current and test duration.
Are you getting errors, CEL, etc? Why are you changing the dmtl? This is a good detailed overview of the system operation https://www.princeton.edu/~sdepasqu/...k.Diag.Sys.pdf |

I didn't have any codes come back / no CEL by Wednesday when I dropped my car off for the airbag recall. (knock on wood)
If I get a chance, I'll pop on INPA and see what I get on testing a new pump. My errors were 2A15 and 2A16 which were fine and superfine leaks. I also had an intermittent gas cap warning on the dash. I did change my gas cap as well, because it had the green (original) gasket, new one is blue. I'm not entirely sure what 2A17 means, because my searches have not been too definitive. Edit: Bad news for me, 2A16 came back. If I try to run the test I get an error, but I'm not sure what conditions it is looking for. The screen does show a test result though, My three values are 24, 18, 19. Again supposed to be reference and test values and a good tight system should test with a higher current. Mine tests low hence the CEL Last edited by djh2; 10-14-2017 at 06:57 AM.. |

I too have the 2A15 error with an intermittent gas cap warning. I've replaced my DMTL pump and gas cap. I get an error when running the DMTL test in INPA concerning sequence or condition.
Not sure what else to do... |

Well, I'm going to be doing my oil filter housing gasket and valve cover gasket soon. While I'm in there, I am going to try to check for cracked fittings or anything else that looks out of place. Otherwise it's on to a smoke test or dropping it off at a shop for me.
I can report back with anything if I find something helpful |

The (google) translations:
current for reference leak detection current at large scale current measurement So that's showing me the reference leak is 25.9 mA. I'm not sure what the "large scale" refers to. Finally, looks like the last is the test measurement. Now, my test was 24-18-19. Yours is 26-19-26. So in my case, the test matches the large scale, and yours the test matches the reference. These are both with NEW DMTL pumps. Mine still throws a leak error after about 100-200 miles of driving from a full tank. Will you report back on yours in a few days? |
