Reg numbers on retention.

I have a private reg that I haven't used for about 2 years. I've not paid or been issued a bill to keep it on retention.

Am I in hock to the DVLA? If I want to use it again will they charge me? Or have I lost it?

I think you have to pay £80 to reclaim/use it from memory

You can keep it on retention for various numbers of years. If in doubt, phone the DVLA, its quick to get through and they are really helpful.

Yep, just bought another reg today - 10 year validity and you can renew just before it expires.

10yrs is more recent, use to be 2yrs, check yours just in case, the certificate should have all the relevant dates, I had one with 2yrs, they upgraded it to 10 for free, but that was 1yr ago

I thought you had to pay £80 per year to keep it on retention, I'm sure I used to get a reminder and a bill every year?

You used to. The retention certificate is now valid for 10 years.

To the OP : I'd suggest you get in touch with DVLA cherished numbers Dept directly, when I've had to contact them on the phone in the past they've been very helpful.
