b58 oil temps at track days?
Wondering if anyone has had their B58 M240i's at the track running hard, and if they know what their oil temps were during their 20 to 30 minute sessions? Any overtemp issues or power reducing modes found?
I had the BMS oil cooler bypass valve in my N55 E90 only for track days. It at least kept the oil temps no higher than 270F, and never went into reduced power mode. No such option on the B58, so wondering if oil temps are better controlled. TIA |

I have two friends who tracked their Mx40i. They are not by any mean pro drivers more likely just gone to track day to test their abilities but no issues from what I've heard.

I've taken the car ('17 M240i) to the track twice for a total of about 100 laps of a 2.3km circuit. I can see in my logs that both days the Oil temperature never exceeded 112°C (234°F), usually very stable around 111°C. These were not warm days (~8-14°C).
Hope that helps. |

Thank you all. This correlates well with the information I've been able to get off my car. I've yet to get higher than 112C on my temp gage so far, so thinking that running hard may raise it towards 120C. While ambient temps at the track can exceed 35C/95F around here, I'm encouraged to hear that oil temps appear to stay below 120C/248F. I can live with this all day long, compared to the indicated 132C/270F I was seeing on my N55 engine.

Had an open track day at Thunderhill last Monday, temps in the low 70's and sunny skies. This was a completely open track day, meaning you could run as often and as long as you wanted. I'm pleased to report that no matter how hard or how long I ran, the oil temperature indicated on the dash after going into the secret menu options never exceeded 114C (237.2F). I'll take that all day long, considering that the N55's run at 270F and higher at the track. The B58 water cooled oil cooler does its job perfectly. Even when ambient temps reach 100 here is SoCal, I'm confidant oil temps won't exceed 120C, which is fine with me.

Yes, viscosity would matter, not sure about group type. I spoke to someone involved on the FCP Euro racing team by phone after he responded to my questions regarding oils suitable for track use in the B58 engine. The worst thing you could do is run the 0W-20 BMW LL-14FE on the track. Too thin. His recommendation was to use a high quality 5W-40 BMW LL-01 oil, just as I had been doing in my 335i previously. I've since found information that BMW LL-01 oils are approved for the B58 engine. See attached for 6 cylinder engines. He indicated the 40 weight oil would provide better protection at higher temps and higher loads. I was using Motul 8100 5W-40.

I haven't tracked my car - however after the first 1000 miles I've been running 5W40 and changing every 5000k miles - these low viscosity oils with 10,000-15,000 miles oil changes are for the birds.

I doubt this engine will suffer from any heat related issue.
This thing has 5 heat exchangers in front to reject the heat. (and 3 different coolant pumps, 2 electric 1 mechanical) M240 has total of 10 heat exchangers (5 coolers in front, AC condenser, heater core, evap core, charge air cooler, trans cooler) I guess BMW was tired of having heat issues from V8 engines (N63/S63). lol |

Also looks like if you bought from FCP euro and used paypal you could use this https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/returns and get a refund for the return shipping

I've got a 5L jug and a filter ready to return to FCP next week. Will try this large 12X12 box as well.
