Display Key
Looks like I'll be getting a display key as it's part of the tech-pack option. It's not something I'd bother with if it was on its own as it looks like a bit of a beast to lug around. Does anyone know if you get a normal key as well?

Would hope so as not sure what your options are when the battery runs out. I think it can utilise the wireless charging pad, if you’ve specced it, though.

Not convinced on the key though as a) I already have an app on my phone, b) you have to charge it, although not sure how often and c) it looks huge! I'm going to look like a cast member from Star Trek playing with his Tricorder every time I want to lock the car! Really hope you get a normal key as well. Not sure the Tricorder will fit in my dry bag when kiteboarding! |

Yes, you do get a regular key as well. No tiny wallet keys anymore. BMW keys just keep getting bigger and bigger. I think that they are conditioning us for the predicted keyless world where the smartphone replaces the key entirely.
On the X3 the display key is a novelty, not an advantage. We do not have remote parking so as a previous poster said, we have the same functionality with the iPhone app. |

You're not missing anything. The display key is way too big, and way too heavy. It also needs to be charged up every now and then. Not well thought through.

I hope they add it as an option next year.

It's a fair price for what you get.
I just did not get it because I usually keep the keyfob in the same pocket as coins (though I usually don't carry coins), so the screen will be full of scratches after several months, and I need the key chain hole though I only carry 1-2 keys. The features and the keyfob itself were appealing for the price, but couldn't justify that I would pay to have less convenience/comfort. |

I asked my CA if I could see one, as he had several cars with the "Ultimate Package" that includes the key. He said that he had not seen one for the X3 yet. Apparently they are susceptible to scratches and so are kept away from view.
I am curious as to whether it is any smaller than the Motorola v60 phone that came in my E70 X5 |

I've confirmed with my sales rep that 2 normal key fobs come with the car. I'll be getting a display key as well as part of the package I ordered.

That is interesting, I expected that the Display key in the package would replace one of the 2 normal keys. That would be a pleasant surprise as I expect that once the novelty wears off a display key will sit in a metal lined box.

My salesperson said 'You are still given the normal keyfob', so I thought it would be 2 keyfobs + 1 display key....but this may be the case. |
