Run-flats vs Non-run-flats/Advice Please.
Hi, everyone. I'm about to purchase the 2018 BMW X3 30i M-Sport Package optioned with the 20" M Double-spoke wheels - style 699M Bi-Color with mixed perf run-flat tires. But rather than buy a set of dedicated winter tires (and wheels) I'd like to switch out/replace those summer run-flat tires with Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus Ultra High Performance Tires (recommended by Tire Rack; see attached screen-grab photo).
I'd like to be absolutely sure the 20" Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus non-run-flats that Tire Rack recommends will fit the optioned 20" wheels that come with the 2018 X3 — so can anyone with more expertise than I have assure me they'll fit properly? And is there any danger whatsoever in replacing the mixed performance summer run-flats that come with the 2018 X3 with all season non-run-flat tires? Thanks for your guidance and help, much appreciated! |

FWIW, I'm thinking of doing the same thing. I haven't decided if I'm going to lease, but I know if I do that the stock tires probably won't last the lease, so I'm thinking about bagging up the stock performance tires and putting some good all-seasons on, rather than using them up in combination with winter tires. I can then put them back on later if I turn the lease in. |

You can do 255/40 R21 in the front and 285/35 R21 in the rear. That's about .4" wider and you'll be going 1% faster than your speedo says. The 8.5" and 9.5" 21" wheels are the narrowest recommended widths for 255s and 285s, respectively. If you want to go wider you should talk to your installer.

Thanks, SOR, for the confirmation. And I don't know about you, but I plan on ordering my 2018 X3 with the spare tire option so swapping the summer run-flats with all-season non-run-flats won't put me in a "stranded" situation should I ever get a flat.

The ride quality of run-flats is not that great (hitting a pothole in one makes a sound like the strut tower bottoming out). I would definitely option the compact spare and go with non-RFT if possible.

I have cars with and without run-flats. Early run-flat equipped BMW's suffered from a very harsh ride. I am concerned that with the option to have non-runflats, we will suffer from poor ride quality if we do not select non-runflats.
My first run-flat equipped X5 had a flat when my wife was driving. She would have really struggled to change the tire on an E70. That convinced me of the value. The Pirelli P Zero run flats on my 335 GT offer good noise control and ride comfort. Does the new X3 offer a "mobility kit" for non-run flats? I have that in my M3 - it is a can of gunk that should temporarily seal the leak and a special compressor that switches from a gunk/air mix to air. |

Just be aware that the $150 is not the only cost. You will also lose 3" of cargo height.

I have this in my M3 as well - it is worthless. I tried to use it in my previous M3. The gunk just made a mess and did not patch the leak at all. Any flat basically means call AAA for a tow.

Gotcha, BWCOOPER, and thanks! Yep, I'm aware of the cargo height "shrinkage" when ordering the spare tire option but fortunately in my case it's not too much of a deterrent.

I’m looking to do exactly the same! Happy to forfeit the boot space for the assurance that I have a spare wheel. Annoyingly, it doesn’t look like the Pirelli Zero All Season Plus is available in the Uk.
Two options appear to be Vredstein Quatrac 5 and Pirelli Scorpion Zero. Will need to do more research. Big fan of winter tyres so will need to be convinced that the all season option will be ok in winter. If all goes to plan, would like not to have to change wheels every 6 months. |

Tire Rack should ship to the UK, takes about a week, I'm not sure what your customs charges will be though. I put the Pirelli Zero All Seasons on the stock 699Ms right after delivery. May buy the 695s and put the stock run flats on them for the summer.

I bought Pirelli Scorpion 20" winters. They were made in the UK so there should not be any duty if you select those - just VAT. |

I took delivery in Spartanburg of my X3. As they were going over the vehicle with me, they opened the rear hatch and that was the first time I discovered that i lost 3" of floor space AND the built in tie down rails due to ordering with non-run flat tires. The "genius" nor the sales person were aware of this change when ordering with non-run flats. When building from BMW website, at the time, there was no mention of the alteration to accommodate the spare in the floor. I was very irritated that I learned this "key" piece of information on delivery. Unfortunately, I didn't see your post before ordering my vehicle. Thanks for your pictures and letting others know, it obviously isn't a concern to BMW.

Was it not possible to order the non run flat tyres without the spare tyre?
I ordered my X3 with non run flat tyres and do not have the raised cargo floor. |
