2009 changes coming to idrive ... ?

The 3 series is reportedly getting it, so I would imagine the M3 will as well.

Man, I hope not. I'm getting an '08 in August.

I knew there was a reason to wait for the MY09! I hope this makes it to the M3. Finally they're bringing their system more in line with what the competitors offer.

I wouldn't get too excited. From a marketing standpoint, BMW doesn't want to piss off everybody that paid at, above, or near list for their cars by offering a significant upgrade on cars that will sell for less money. I would be surprised if the M3 isn't one of the last cars to get this system. X5->5 Series->6 Series-> New 7 ->3 Series.

Yeah, just wishful thinking. When I think about it I thought there was a posting somewhere on the e90 forum talking about the new iDrive in the new 3 series. On the other hand they are going to add the connected drive though here soon and a lot of cars will be left out won't they, especially if it isn't retro for the earlier assembled models?

Didn't those guys on e90 figure out that the new I-drive knob everyone was gawking over was actually for a 5-series (redesign) and not the 3-er. I can't keep all of the speculation straight. I think it's pretty standard operating procedure to add little tweaks, like Bluetooth mid-lifecycle in the E46, and the conversion from CD Rom Nav to DVD Rom Nav during the current generation of the 7 series, but a gigantic step forward is usually reserved for complete redesigns, or at the very least a mid-cycle refresh when they change the crease on two body panels and change the shape of the lights. I guess the thinking is, "if they aren't bitching for it, we won't give it to 'em yet." Maybe it's marketing, or maybe I'm just the eternal pessimist. (Which I am, just not sure in this particular case.)

Hang on. By that logic, though, I'll buy an '08 and they'll start shipping the M3s with M5 engines in them in MY09. You're welcome guys.

Hell I don't remember! I have always hated the fact that they (BMW) tends to trickle out technology that's really cool and seem to add it to models without much thought. For example I believe the adaptive headlights debuted first on the three series first. You would have thought they would have reserved that for the 7!?!?!? It makes sense to wait until a midlife refresh but I'm now on the list for a 2009 so I hope it makes it! This is what BMW needed when they introduced "flame surfacing".

Just came across this thread as well:

...is this old news or what?
