Another new UK 540i - options talk
Bored of my Audi A6 2.0 190bhp, I decided to come back to Bimmer!
Just ordered 540i xDrive M sport, expected end of March: Sophisto Grey Black Dakota leather Black alloys Options chosen: Visibility package Comfort package 4 zone climate with heated rear seats and steering wheel Head up display Apple CarPlay (not sure if worth it after reading other thread) Sunroof and sun protection glass Power bootlid Split fold seats Adaptive cruise control Options encouraged to get and I did: Display key ("if you love gadgets you have to have it") Harmon Kardon* Parking assistant plus ("surround view is a cool feature") Options discouraged so taken off: * Bowers and Wilkins ("not worth the extra money") Rear seat entertainment ("not worth it if your kids already have iPads, don't look nice, sit too low and stick out too much") Interested to hear them stopping me add extras!! Probably too honest to get the extra commission or some other reason?? Also managed to get £11k off so was quite pleased with myself after a lot of negotiation (£4k BMW £7k dealership). Absolutely can't wait, so much so I would love to read through the manual in advance but apparently not available unless someone wants to share last 7 digits of VIN...?! Really looking forward to some power after cruising in the Audi for 3 years. Was worried looks are a bit plain but examples in dealership and on road don't seem to be kitted out/have M aerodynamic body styling? Pics on here get me excited....!!! Edit 18th March - arrived. Pic added and thoughts in later post Last edited by jdogg; 03-18-2018 at 04:52 PM.. Reason: Pics |

Regarding owner's guide, I went looking as well. I found an Australian VIN for a 540i and plugged that into the Driver's Guide phone app. You can probably do the same for a UK one, but at least this one is right-hand-drive. Number was G459614 |

Personally wouldn't bother with the display key as you get the same functionality plus quite a bit more with remote services and a app on your phone for quite a bit less.
If you go for remote parking though you will get the key as you need it for that. If not though save £235 and specify remote services for £60 instead. I would also suggest the HUD. Really good and a very intuitive and ergonomic addition |

Good call on B&W sound system , I think you have to be a serious audiophile to notice the difference above HK at most volume levels. The jump btwn the standard audio and HK is far greater , and definitely worth it! You have to draw line with options, I prob would have liked to have gone for drive assist plus but settled for drive assist alone, and the UK premium pack wouldn't go a miss either. Main thing is that engine is a pure joy, get ready :-)

Congrats, nice colour choice - my G31 in Sophisto/black leather/black alloys is on order! I ordered on the 27th November. The dealer had no allocation so put down delivery for end March but apparently the car should make it to the UK by the end of January.
I went for the HK as I have it in my F10, and don't expect to ever use the display key, though I did try and order remote parking later, but the car was already being painted. I went for Parking Assistant Plus for the surround view cameras because I'm worried for those black alloys! |

Pretty much echo what people have said.
Display Key - nice gadget for 1 week but then waste of time Harmon Kardon - worth it HUD- can't live without it Surround View - very handy especially when making sure you are dead centre in parking spaces Also I really like adaptive cruise control, for road works and queues of traffic.

Congrats, fantastic options added
I love Display Key and if you order it don't forget to add wireless charging option , a neat convenience to charge the key or phone

So so many options!! To be far it’s only the Germans who ask you to add extras, most others have many of these things as standard... |

I'd say get the Display Key only if you are specifying remote parking. Without it, I'm not sure it has any purpose even as a cool tech. I use remote parking quite a bit in tight car parking spaces. You can have your car out of a space in less than 30seconds, so has real-world application.
Happy waiting. |

Adaptive cruise is great, good choice. The only problem is in the UK is that on a busy motorway people jump in to the SENSIBLE gap it leaves when your doing 70mph.

It's better than the implementation in the f10. The logic seems to be that if a car pulls into the gap ahead AND is going faster than you your car won't brake. However if it is slowing it will to maintain the gap.
The gap can be configured , I prefer 3 bars for dry roads and if wet 4. I would like to be any closer as I feel you risk rear ending potentially if car jams on the anchors. There is also traffic jam assist which I feel is worthwhile and better than the lane assist on a motorway. |

Thanks for all the comments. Will post the obligatory pics when car delivered!! Very excited. If anyone has a pic with the colour/wheel combo I've chosen I would appreciate seeing it, only one I've seen online is a G31

Only had it alert me on one occasion so far whilst I was pulling out of a drive. The car was on the opposite side of the road . Seemed a legitimate warning.
I have also had 2 warnings about cars from the side entering the roundabout ahead of me. |
